Boxing. Simple effective and you'll actually get to practice properly.

Only issues I have with boxing are: you don't learn to use elbows knees or kicks, and they leave their nuts open all of which to me is madness in a street situation. Also they tend to always train with straps/gloves which doesn't condition your fists. And no ground game. But as I said realistically you'll learn enough to stand up for yourself in a pub.

I definitely would recommend against karate or kung fu if you're looking primarily for self defence.

Agree with Muay Thai too but less of the elbows and complicated stuff, straight leg kicks and boxing, two or three options max, decide and prevail.

Yeah boxing is ing stupid. In a street fight you'd be more likely to break your knuckles than hurt the other person enough to stop them from attacking you. The elbows and shins are the hardest part of the body and thus best both for hurting the other person while reducing the impact on your own body.

I would say this is my favourite martial arts movie of all time.

They actually do most of the stunts. In a sister movie by the same director, the star trained for FOUR YEARS before starting shooting, and was hospitalised for a month during because she ed up a scene.

Films are great. But in real life generally you're against someone else who doesn't want to lose. And it's not so easy.

boxing teaches you how and where the points are of the opponent that are most vulnerable, as well as teaching you how to move your legs in order to dodge attacks. Of course, it wont come in handy in a bar/street fight where everything goes, but you can definitely learn a lot from boxing, even if you decide to use other parts of your body to attack and defend and it can be quite useful in crowded situations where you need close combat and punching correctly is essential...

you do know how hard your shin has to be in order to use it for defense and offense? it takes hitting a surface with it until it bleeds and eventually it will harden, not for everyone. Try going out and using your shin right now against a tree see how much it hurts, you'll disable yourself if you haven't hardened it properly.

that said KM seems the best for self defense ,which is what the OP is looking for.

Yeah .. as wanky as it might sound I think a lot of bar fights and street fights come down to attitude. The really tough guys are tough because not because they're technically proficient boxers or martial artists but because they don't get nervous in a fight situation and they're not scared to seriously injure someone.

I would just like to ask if any of the MMA gurus in this thread have actually been in a scrap in a pub toilet or similar lol?
