Thinking about doing some martial arts training (pg. 9)

One thing I gotta say is that you need hundreds of hours of training to be proficient in an art. If you're not willing to put in the time, get a gun. In the end, you're only as good as how serious you take the training.

Nonsense and urban legend. Not surprised that you would quote this as truth, though.

Sort of on topic....I read an interesting article that tested "natural ability" vs. practice, and at the end of a certain number of (thousands of) hours, the people with natural ability were no better than those who put in the same amount of practice.

Point being, practice DOES make perfect.

glad someone is trying to stay on topic. I know slylee is trying to figure out how to tie this topic thread in with her bf and all but dont ruin this one...plz?

Thats an interesting study. Anyone who thinks you do not have to practice in ANYTHING you want to be good at is just fooling themselves.

In the end there was no advantage. They even determined the exact number of hours of practice it takes for anyone to be considered an expert in their area. Was really interesting.

There was a 20/20 program about gun control and how having a gun does not mean you know how to use it in the right situation. In prove their point, they gave 10 students, who are gun enthusiasts, a gun to carry with them into their classroom. Unbeknown to the students, there will be a masked gunman bursting into the classroom and capping people. Everyone of those students failed to protect their classmates and themselves. Some couldn't even get their gun out of the holster.
The point of the story is, unless you train for these situations, like the police through many hours of repetition, you're not going to know what is the best thing to do.

Karate "masters" at McDojos can break 12 wooden boards in one punch, but unless they train in how to fight against another person, that power punching skill is useless. The idea behind repetition and practice is to drill the movement into your head so much, you don't even think about it. The feeling is like pushing a shopping cart while talking on the phone and reading your shopping list while managing to avoid hitting people and other objects.

if you can remember where you found it just post it on here. Would love to show it to the kids I coach and rub it in their faces about practicing haha.

adrenaline also plays a big role in fighting. some dudes are just nuts and once they get hit, turn into maniacs and can do some serious damage.

i've seen the skinny metalhead geekboy go nuts on the star baseball player in high school. pretty funny .
