i would say look beyond the physical aspects and get into something that also trains you mentally and spiritually. something that teaches focus, concentration, self-control, awareness - all that stuff.
don't take a martial art just to learn some ass-kicking moves.
Direct
Watch Blood and bone 10 times and youll learn to fight.

the bald dude hits mad hard in middle of video.
some of the bigger mma and pride fighters are starting to train in systema. Looks interesting enough, using the persons weak points and joints to bring them down.

I've been studying kobudo for 6 years, and I always recommend it for those willing to dedicate many years, even a life time, to training.
To me, it feels like a true martial art, in the sense that the techniques taught generally cover everything from walking, philosophy, perspective, Japanese history, striking, weapons, and grappling. The fighting techniques are direct, efficient, and effective. There is no gun defense training, however. I was lucky enough to find a teacher who didn't feed me bull about ninjas, smoke and mirrors, one who understood Japanese and knew the enormous detail and richness of the arts.

Hmm people standing and waiting for it, love to see what it would look like against a straight leg kick to the chest. Looks like a lot of fat skin head pissing around to me.

I wanna see a shaolin monk vs some karate master wanabe. Also, how come none of the vids from any style martial art doesn't look like the matrix type of fighting, where there's multiple blocks and punches in good order. In real life everything looks random with lots of faking and jumping which is retarded.

i would go with plain ol' karate. it's about discipline and mental control and SELF DEFENSE (not fighting).
unless you're just getting into this because you want to get buff and be able to kick some ass and be cool...then i'd go with some form of this new garbage they call MMA.

seriously, i just want to be able to defend myself. The city is pretty nuts. Had a friend that was recently mugged up there. LA (current location) is pretty bad too. Never had any probs, but now that i say that, some crack head will probably pull a shank on me.
Buff ---> not me
Fat ---> ME! :)

There are some koryu karate schools around. They are nothing like the McDojo karate. They are badass because they represent what karate use to be - a martial art and not a sport.
