Check out his most recent blog entry... very eye opening read, covering everything from generic eurotrance, what trance is missing today, and doing livesets like his essential mix!

John 00 Fleming artist album and 00.db album in the works :D

This was already posted. And while I love the EM and I agree with most everything he has to say about trance, it's absolutely nothing new. The most active users on TA(MD) have been stating the exact same thing since 02-03, maybe even before.

The thing about livesets etc. is interesting though.

Absolutely nothing new / nothing he hasn't already said before.

Whilst his sets are often good, I don't get why he thinks he's a freakin' authority on trance music.

i still want the raw mp3 or wav from the EM!! not that radio1 compressed sound but the raw file.

I listened to his Essential Mix again last night. Kicks more ass every time I hear it.

He's the freakin authority on trance music because he plays better trance than everybody else :p

I don't think he's ever claimed to be an authority on trance music, he's simply the only big jock not scared to speak up about what's wrong with it.

However, if you're implying that his actions connote the thought that he's an authority, he has every right to think that. He's as experienced with trance as any person in the world, and not just fluffy club trance but goa and psy-trance too. Fleming was DJing in the late '80s, when many people on this forum hadn't even uttered their first words. He experienced the creation of the genre first hand. If that doesn't imbue him with with some form of authority on the subject, then I'd like to hear what you think does.

He said in his thing that he doesn't think he's the authority on trance lol

Anyways, anyone have a link to the EM and a tracklist? I still haven't heard it!

I don't think I'm an authority at all I have no idea why you think this, I even said this in my blog! No I don't believe my style music should be law!! There's a misconception with people thinking I hate uplifting Trance and people involved in it which is wrong as I'm close friends with Armin, Ferry etc and speak to Jono from Above & Beyond at least one a week...I enjoy playing a decent slab of uplifting Trance!

This thing that saddens me is the Trance scene is dominated by commercial Euro Trance, and anyone that plays outside these boundaries wont get a look in. Barriers are put up by these people who support it, if anything these are the people that are alienating themselves from the rest of the scene, many think they are the authority on EDM.
You see, in my eyes, we are all one in this scene and there should be no rules. DJ's should be allowed to express themselves musically and play all sorts of genres in their sets, as I like too. I simply play music that I love, I don't see it as a; House, Psy, Techno, Trance track, I play the track because it's a dam good track. In todays scene the DJ is expected to play a certain sub genre and throw out all the tunes that people know!

I've been in this game for 25 years, and this cycle is nothing new, I can already see the birth of a new scene so its exciting times. The superstar DJ's have created their own scene making room for a new one that will support more specialist DJ's and producers, eventually a platform for new talent to come through. It shouldn't be a case of just going out when a guest DJ comes in town, we have tons of local talented DJ's on our own doorsteps that should be supported.
When you've experienced these local nights with a 'family vibe' that are packed out with regular faces every week, you crave to get them back as these are the places that let DJ's breathe musically. Todays Trance nights are events, kinda like mini concerts focused around the DJ, so the DJ is forced to play all the hits the crowd require, he just doing his job!

I shouldn't be saying this, but the DJ has got more powerful than the music, it's time to turn things around and get people going out for the music again no matter who is playing. Just go out and have fun with an open mind!!

I'm brave posting on here.....I'l hold my breathe and getting ready for bashing.....but lets try and make this a sensible debate not going off track or attacking each other. I wouldn't be posting here or speaking out if I didn't care for this scene :)

From a column I wrote in January:

quote:
In the past few years, I’ve seen every international jock from DJ Sneak to Yoji Biomehanika, Simon Dunmore to John ‘00’ Fleming and Jesse Rose to Adam Beyer. I’ve grooved to house, bopped to techno, shuffled to trance and stood dumbfounded at my inability to dance to drum ‘n’ bass (is hopping dancing?). The point being, nearly every ‘big’ DJ, even the most credible ones, suffer from the same problem: they flog their own music too much.

It’s an absurd situation really. The DJs get booked on the strength of their productions and usually nothing else. When they front up, the crowd is there to see them play their music, rather than a well-crafted set of other producers’ tunes. People get disappointed if their favourite jock doesn’t play their favourite track. Unfortunately, the DJ has no choice. The promoter also wants him to play that big hit from two years ago. Sometimes the DJ plays his own music simply because he doesn’t like much else on the market.

The result is that the merit of each set is ignored in favour of a jukebox style approach. “Yeah, he was good, but he didn’t play tune x, so overall I felt let down.”

While you're here John, do you have a set date for your first Joof club night in Brighton? I'll be in the UK in summer and I'm very keen to check it out.

Couldn't agree more with what J00F said, well done. There should be more DJs like you, and Sasha & Digweed, who play tracks that they like and make the set progress flawlessly into different subgenres. Problem is, not all great producers are great DJs.

why is that a problem? to me that sounds like a solution. producers should produce, djs should dj. people should focus on what their good at and forget about everything else. specialization wtf! and if there's some geniuses out there handling both djeing and producing they should put up a liveact! liveacts is the future!
