I'd argue that our education system should go beyond teaching stuff like basic sex ed. Also should teach stuff like basic courtesy, duties of citizenship, how to behave in public, etc.
Stuff that a lot of parents fail to teach their kids, and kids end up screwed up not because they are bad kids, but they just weren't taught the basics to be a functioning, and contributing member of the society. |
People can't teach what they themselves do not know. I can count on one hand the number of teachers I had during my public schooling days who actually imparted anything of long-term use to me. Sadly, most of 'em were just collecting a paycheque. |

This tangent goes back to my earlier post on the fact that most parents do not have the requisite knowledge to discuss the many and varied facets of human sexuality with their children.
Let's face it, there are many religious parents out there who still believe that God will strike you down for masturbating (insert Every Sperm is Sacred), or that you will go blind, or insane, etc. etc. Of course there is no biblical or scientific basis for this belief; however, this lack of knowledge strongly moulds the value orientation that will be taught to their children.
Do you want moral values based on facts or historical misconceptions? |

I have no issue with schools teaching the science behind sex but the minute the school says my kid should abstain from sex or they should use a condom then they have crossed the line into parenting...and that is not their job. |

"If you go have sex, do it safely" and "abstain from sex" are both value laden positions. The difference is that the public health position of safe sex is at least value neutral whereby educators are not going to tell your kids what decision they must make, while abstinence tries to do the parenting and tell kids what moral position they must prescribe to. It's pretty clear which position I hold to.
Depending on the parent, even teaching sexual biology is an afront to their right to raising their child as a sexually ignorant being. The reality, is that with even the most comprehensive programs that teach about masturbation, homosexuality, anal sex, oral sex, etc. VERY few parents actually opt out their children. The last SIECCAN study pegs it at about 4% (basically 1 kid per class). Most people that I've ever talked to tend to agree with this number, as there is always the 1 kid in class with the hardcore Christian parents that gets pulled out. I feel that this tends to reflect the conclusion that the VAST majority of parents are completely ill-equipped to instruct their children. If you don't have the tools, you can't parent effectively. |

At the Grade 3 level, the extent of the conversation is some boys and girls have 2 daddies and 2 mommies. Sometimes two boys love each other, and sometimes 2 girls love each other.
To ease your fears, it won't be a treatise on the Joy of Gay Sex |
