as a parent, I don't want my daughter learning about anal sex, oral sex, salad tossing, rusty trombone, Cincinnati bowtie, juice cocktails, hot carl, pearly necklace, doubler decker pussies, donkey punch or tea bagging in grade 6 for fuk sakes. Let them learn about the basics as Vdub says, leave the rest for grade 9.

edit: In all honesty, until you're a parent you really can't speak. If you don't have kids yet, wait and see how your views change. Mine did. I used to think this and that, until I had my daughter and realized how much you want to protect them and their innocence in such a corrupt society where anything and everything is readily available to them, via numerous means. This doesn't mean don't inform them or make them knowledgeable about their bodies or sex in general, but to talk about blowjobs and buttseks in grade 6 it's still a very young age despite all the porn or magazines they might see.

... oh boy

Exactly why we need a program that will promote tolerance, understanding, and acceptance of all.

...pitying those who are so blinded by fear - it's hard to imagine living with such a narrow, fear-skewed view.

I'm not a parent - but I do care about what is taught in our schools. I actually take a special interest in educational matters because I will one-day be teaching that material. I trust the judgement of the professionals who develop the learning curriculum. I don't think you have to worry about graphic sexual lessons being given on tea bagging or anal sex.

Nor do I imagine there will a "How to Give Good Head 101" pop quiz any time soon....

Is there really something wrong with explaining how a woman's vagina becomes lubricated when aroused? Really???

Grades 6 and 7 means the children are anywhere between 11 and 13. Sorry to burst your bubble but girls at that age already know what a blow job is, (and they may-well have already given one).

Alright, you guys win. The huge controversy and debate has sidelined this curriculum change indefinitely. Provincial government is either too concerned about losing voters and its image, or is it the powerful religious lobby, perhaps, playing a role? "Lack of proper consultation" seems like a lame political excuse to stop this change.

Congratulations, guys! Lets allow kids to learn all about anal seks and lubrication from their friends and TV (they have waaay better and more accurate advice to give). Short part of my childhood I spent in a conservative family, and I can tell you the parents will not teach much if any of sex ed at home to their children, apart from DONT DO THIS or THAT or ELSE. They will teach what they believe or want instead. In the end, fear wins. Abstinence is a failure.

Or, on the other hand, bumping up sex ed by a year or two is maybe a bit too quick. Who knows? People dont like controversy. Not a big deal though, as I am not going to be up in arms over the sudden abortion of this curriculum change. Oh, I picked the right word for that one, too. :)

Ontario rethinks controversial sex ed curriculum

April 22, 2010
Canadian Press

A controversial new sex ed curriculum that would have seen Ontario kids learn about sexual orientation in Grade 3 and masturbation in Grade 6 will be postponed and reworked, Premier Dalton McGuinty said Thursday.

It's obvious from listening to parents over the past two days that the curriculum needs a "serious rethink," McGuinty said after an unrelated event in London, Ont.

"We'll take the (sex ed curriculum) we had proposed putting into place back off the shelf," he said.
The government, McGuinty added, will "create more opportunities for parents to lend shape to a policy with which they are more comfortable."

The existing sex ed curriculum, which hasn't been update for some 12 years, will remain in place.
The proposed changes, which were first reported by the Hamilton Spectator, outraged some religious and conservative groups who say they're not comfortable with teaching kids as early as Grade 3 about same-sex families.

Under the changes that were quietly released in January, Grade 1 kids were to be taught to identify genitalia - among other body parts - using the correct word, such as penis, vagina and testicle.

In Grade 5, kids were to be taught to identify parts of the reproductive system and describe how the body changes during puberty.

In Grade 7, the plan was to teach kids how to prevent unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

Opposition critic Christine Elliott says some of the outrage comes from a lack of consultation, adding parents should have had more say in the changes before they were introduced.

because the old "program" was bad and it didnt work??

I think where the government & school board failed is that they underestimated the reaction of parents being comfortable with such a proposal. If they can provide an outline or curriculum defining what will be covered and when during the semester/year, as a heads up, it's still acknowledging and respecting the parent's authority. In all honesty, I don't believe they will be crude or graphic in the approach, but to throw it on parents out of what seemed like no-where? It was just poor tactic on their part and that's what all the fuss is about.

I'd like to consider myself very liberal and open minded especially towards these things, but it's all in the delivery. Their's was just sloppy and not properly thought through.

You have a point there. Nothing wrong with current curriculum. I dont see a problem with the current program, except with the age factor - kids are likely to be exposed to these issues before the actual class. I was just taken aback by the fierce religious opposition and some of the crazy excuses used.

Curriculums are always updated and upgraded, and maybe more work should be put in this one to include all religious and non-religious groups and parents to make a good model after considering all factors which we have all discussed here. I dont think that the provincial government did that, hence the uproar.
