“I don’t understand how the business of sensual behaviour between consenting adults has anything to do with Grade 3,” she said. “Grade 6? Getting them ready for masturbation and vaginal lubrication? Give me a break. They’re going to traumatize these children – they’re going to be doing everything out in the schoolyard.”

Getting them ready for masturbation is wrong at age 11???

Um boys... lol Does that not sound age-appropriate?

"They're going to traumatize these children - they're going to be doing everything out in the schoolyard"

There is no place for sex in the school system.

Let kids learn the way all animals do....by instinct.

And in response to Catholic schools. I think it should be expected that at a Catholic school you're not going to have extensive sex ed classes, and also have mandatory religion classes. If you don't want that, go to a public school. I know some people will say "well my parents made me go there," well you can transfer. I had a lot of friends who transferred schools even though their parents didn't agree.

lol I certainly had no say in what school I was attending when I was a child....

The Separate School Board is publicly-funded so it should have the same curriculum as the Public Board. I still get irritated when I think that I wasted 4 highschool credits on the required Religion Classes,(well grade 11 Religion was pretty-cool), but that another topic.

this is no joking manner....we are animals and we should learn about sex the same way all animals do. Our bodies will tell us when we are ready to experience the reproduction process.

But what is taught is another thing... I really think schools should cover the basics, that mostly relate to public health and personal respect. Things like how to make decisions (providing students with different approaches), safe sex, the risks (but delivered in a less threatening way), respecting your body and your partner...
But teaching students what blow jobs are or what anal sex is doesnt seem necessary. Leave that for friends, tv, the internet...

I agree 100% with this.

I think kids should be given essential information that will provide them with knowledge necessary to make informed decisions.

Why introduce subjects (oral, anal etc) that students may, or may not yet have been exposed to? Wont this spark further curriosity? It seems unnecessary to me. I went to public school and, like others in this thread, were taught basics (anatomy, reproduction, birth control, STDs). It wasn't awkward at all, and I found the information to be adequate. Maybe I'm a late bloomer, but if I was taught more explicit topics I think I would've been scarred....

How's that religion based sex-ed working out in Africa?

My school taught us sex-ed in grade 5, and we were much better for it.

Really?

My brothers and I did. We all started out in grade school catholic, then we chose to go to a public school and dump the whole religion thing. It just didnt sit well with me as a child, and still doesnt. I am very gratefull my parents never pushed anything on me in terms of what I should beleive.

And yes.....I played with mr winky at a very young age for the very first time. :P Look at me now.....Im fine.........right? :)

You can stop the schools from showing kids, but you cant stop the internet, tv, and magazines etc........from stirring up emotions, questions, curriosity and rising mr winkys :)

really? I was pretty-well informed (Ya - Dr. Sue did teach me a lot). I had boyfriends throughout highschool... I was not a prude and despite all the knowledge and opportunity I had, I didn't become sexually active until I was ready; I was 20 and in a solid relationship...

haha don't get me started....

The Catholic Church (who has a huge influence in Africa), doesn't condone birth control... so rather than teaching about safer sex and condom use, they are continuing to promote abstinence.

Blah Blah Blah...

You don't have to be rude and roll you're eyes at me. I just stated that I had friends whose parents put them into catholic schools, and they wanted to go to public (even though their parents wouldn't let them), and they took it up with the principal or whoever, themselves and switched schools. For one girl it just meant taking the bus too school instead of getting a ride.
