That's a good point...I would imagine that the ideal situation would be to bring in nurses or other public health workers to do this kind of teaching.

I think destroying myths would be a good thing to teach as well...
You know all the ones those horny teenage boys use... 'my penis is too big for a condom to fit on it' 'my balls will hurt for days if we dont have sex'

How ironic that Catholic church is up in arms about children's safety and well being.

You guys have covered most of the points, so there isn't much for me to add or comment. I figured when I heard of development couple weeks ago that it was going to cause serious religious outcry, it was a no brainer.

There are a lot more sexual messages aimed at younger people these days when compared to 10-15 years ago, and many people are too obtuse to see or understand that. Be it music, television, friends, ads, whatever. Kids will be exposed to it somehow, at some level. So I dont think think that curriculum has been changed in order to harm children, but the other way around - to warn them and inform about sexuality, and what can happen. Much worse thing to do is not to tell them anything at all. Then they'll make mistakes to regret for the rest of their lives.

I see.

I have no problem with children being taught the basics of reproduction at a young age, but I think there's a fine line between appropriate curriculum and inappropriate curriculum for a young audience. I still don't think the details of oral sex at age 9.

I remember reading an article with a similar discussion on giving girls the Gardasil (for 4 of the HPV strands) in grade school. A lot of ppl were complaining that this would condone sex in grade school. However, the other side of the argument was that if the girls are having sex and already have these 4 strands of HPV, having the vaccine after would be too late. So they wanted to catch it before they became sexually active.

Are teachers in elementary school also going to be required to have doctor and/or psych degrees? do their existing qualifications to teach really extend to this as well?

See I think this is where having professionals come in and teach the children would come in handy. Kind of like when you do VIP (did you guys do that?) and the police office would come in for a day for 2 months or something like that and teach us about police work and crime etc.

I also see no reason why parents shouldn't be educated as well. All of the developmental stuff and assertiveness training, learning about self-respect, intimate relationships, etc. - to me that's the stuff that should be taught and/or modeled by parents. Teach parents how to teach their kids this !

hahaha VIP was awesome. And I think that would be a great way to teach some of the topics needed to be covered around grade 7.

I guess it comes down to budget... although I think teaching kids about sex is more important than scaring them from drugs/crime.

Agreed. Parents don't know how to handle sexual education-topics with their kids.

As a side-note, the other day I was watching the Tyra Banks show (gawd don't ask me why lol). The show was alllll about periods.

There was a woman on there who was scared to teach her daughter about her frigg'n period. She seriously didn't know how to address it... and that is so common.

I was so so so scared to tell my mom when I got my first period because she seemed so so so uncomfortable in teaching me about it.

This is just minor "girl stuff".... many parents aren't equipped to handle the juicy stuff (... and a big contributer to that is more than likely the fact that they were poorly-educated on the subject when they were children)

This....parents need to learn to be parents...the school board should not be responsible for teaching kids about sex.

... so when the kid with the ultra-conservative parents s up (or gets pregnant, gets an STI, sinks into depression, etc.) then who has to shoulder the economic, social, and health consequences of their ignorance????

hint - us

It should not be the school board's responsibility to parent children. This is a parenting issue and not a school issue. Sure teach about the human body and what the body parts are for but teaching children about sex and whether or not its right or wrong for a kid to have sex is up to the parents.

Should the school board also teach the students about smoking, drinking, and every other harmful thing in the world? These are all issues that parents should deal with...not school boards.
