She still tours around. She comes to the UofW every year during orientation.

damn. I would love to see her.
We had Josey Vogels come to Ryerson. She was pretty good - a younger version of Sue. Fairly entertaining. And I won a competition for putting a condom on a cucumber... with my mouth :p lol

It would be great to see people like her go to elementary schools. Having an 'expert' who is not an authorative figure makes it much easier to learn and ask questions. Plus they are experts on how to deliever the information in the most appropriate way.

I'd be more comfortable with body parts at grade 3 and sex ed at grade 6...

At 6, orientation could be introduced...

Anal and oral sex have NOTHING to do with education and should be ommited...

What's next? Teach them about fetishes???

What about beastiality???

It has everything to do with sex ed, and why not? Is it so wrong to have facts brought up in a classroom with an open discussion about what happens in our world?

Learnt in school or from friends and tv and magazines. Which do you prefer?

The thing i agree with you about is what age it should be discussed at.

Sue was honestly great. I went to see her a couple times. You'd think it'd be weird getting sex tips/advice from an old lady, but she's awesome.

I've never heard of Josey Vogels though. But congrats on the competition. You're so multi-talented Tara. haha I think it would be a much better idea to have an expert teach children as well. They know what they're doing, and would know how to speak to that audience. A lot better than the regular teachers who are probably uncomfortable as hell trying to teach their young students about sex. That's probably why a lot of them don't do a good job, like putting that video on and leaving the room. Just b/c they feel uncomfortable and don't want to teach sex ed, so they do the bare minimum.

Treat children like they're stupid, and they're going to act stupid. Arm them with knowledge/education, and they'll learn to make more informed decisions. There's no reason why young children SHOULDN'T know some of the basics - about their body, about sex. Not only does it demystify their own sexuality, but it will help to protect them from sexual predators. Furthermore, it's pretty goddamn obvious that teaching abstinence and whatever the other bull fear-mongering tactics is futile - the best thing to do is approach sex from a harm-reduction perspective (safe sex, use of condoms, STIs, etc).

People need to grow the up and get real and stop treating children like they're goddamn morons. This is exactly why the world is so full of them (morons) in the first place.

You don't need to worry about it in Ontario....McGuinty is banning sex.

Thank-you...

I swear, some of you must forget what you knew back then... (I'm pretty-sure I'm older than a lot of you but I clearly remember that I knew more than what you're giving today's kids credit for...)

I'm interested to know what your time-line/curriculum would be like?
(i.e. Grade 3 - body; Grade 4 - safe sex etc.)

I think kids as young as 7 are easily ready to know the basic anatomy and bare bones about reproduction. None of this "pee pee" and "my no-no spot" . God ing damn I hate parents who teach that to their children.

Sex ed is not merely a matter of facts.

It is a whole matter of maturity and social/sexual development, which varies from child to child... are they committing to a significant amount of time to be spent nurturing and fostering the developmental aspects around all this? or is just a matter of ensuring that kids know what all the terminology means and how things are done?

Are teachers in elementary school also going to be required to have doctor and/or psych degrees? do their existing qualifications to teach really extend to this as well?

(I'm not a supported of teaching abstinence just to clarify though - i'm just not convinced that the subject matter is being treated seriously enough and that the appropriate groundwork/forethought is going into this)

That's a good point...I would imagine that the ideal situation would be to bring in nurses or other public health workers to do this kind of teaching.
