Downtown isn't really where the bike lanes need to be though. Do you think for a second all the brokers and bankers are going to leave the SUVs and German sadans at home, tuck the cuff of their suits into their socks and ride their bike into work? |
That's a pretty narrow view of the people that work downtown.
But in any case, when I wasn't living walking distance from the office I was biking in and changing into a full suit! the bike home was hell because there was no proper bike lanes. |

Agreed. And majority of people in the downtown core are not bankers wearing suits. Sure there are a hell of a lot of them, but they are not the majority from my experiencing working there. Clerical staff, AA's, custodial staff, food services, retail in the PATH...etc.
The people paying $40/day for parking are not going to change their habits no matter what, and if they don't want to, that is their choice. But do not paint it like the entire workforce is made up of these people
I was in Ottawa a couple weekends ago, and they made it a living nightmare for drivers. You couldn't go straight on roads that you should have been able to (bikes only), cannot turn right/left (even outside rush hour), it was nuts. That being said, Ottawa is a colder city than Toronto, and some how they have struck a balance. It is 'a biking city', so the culture did grow to fill the rules, or the rules were changed to fit the culture. Either way, that is a Canadian city, that some how works.
Toronto has needed more bike lanes for a long time. Both bikers and drivers are idiots, and they need their own space. Saying that there needs to be capacity for more bike lanes, is just putting off the issue because we are never going to find more capacity.
This will hinder the increase in traffic downtown because people will see that it is just inconvenient. The relative convenience we have now, will only last so long. Better to start changing sooner rather than later. |

Keep in mind though, this is just a trail for a few months. If the impact is minimal like they are expecting, then they can go forward, extend it and make it perm.
But, if it blows up like some people think they will - they just ditch the project and don't carry on.
Hasn't New York done some ballsy-moves with creating bike lanes / closing down streets / etc, that motorists initially got all raged about, but the impact ended up not being that bad? |

The majority of cars! Even taking that into consideration, 1 driver + 1 car vs 1 driver + 1 bike. Now we are talking about saving space and increasing capacity. |

I'm sorry but most bicyclists are the ones that break the rules, causing injury or deaths... I'm not trying target everyone, but the majority I've come across have. Just like cars, bicycles have breaks too and more Bicyclists should learn how to use it.
But I understand that the lanes would help, instead of bicyclists weaving in and out of the car lanes. This way I wouldn't worry about running a bicyclist over...
and whats it anyone else's business if I drive my car downtown by myself??! How does that make someone an idiot??! Maybe I don't like taking the Subway? or I need a car to pick stuff up and drop stuff off at work, which is downtown?
Not logical thinking, just targeting like that miss Spitty... that's the last time I'll let you rub your oily spinach fingers all over my car lol :P |

Because, generally speaking, your selfish behaviour is a detriment to the environment around you.
Cyclists, on the other hand, don't use up non-renewable fossil fuels, don't pollute the air with exhaust, and don't take up nearly as much space as a vehicle that's intended for four but is only seating one. |

Thanks Captain Enviro! I never realized until today I could transport monitors, lighting, speaker stands, cases of alcohol on the back of my bike or my backpack! |

Jayx1 has the right to bitch about this.
that, you know how many tree hungers clip the side of my car b/c they can't stop or balance properly? I give you hipsters so much space and you still want more. Oh how I would love to run you ******s down next time I get clipped.
I've seen so many losers waiting @ the lights trying to balance-stop and land face first. At this point we can't move since the loser on the ground is crying.
Ban all the bikes in the Dt core, so they can use the TTC. The TTC needs the cash for the amazing future plans and excellent customer service. You live in "Urban Mega City", expect to use the TTC or Cabs to get around ... you don't live in a village anymore. |

Defensive much?
I did preface everything I said with "generally speaking". Nice of you to conveniently ignore/ridicule everything else I made note of.
Moving around gear is one thing. Saying "whats it anyone else's business if I drive my car downtown by myself??!" makes you out to be a selfish 'tard. |

Why not ask the same of suburbanites who choose to drive into town each and every day to go to work? What makes them any more special than the cyclist who lives downtown and chooses to bike to and from work?
Though come to think of it, you may have something... Let's force everyone at gunpoint to take the mothering TTC! It's the only logical, completely non-emotional way to go!
 |
