I have no idea what possesses people to drive downtown and back during rush hour.
There's parking lots by every major GO and subway station, so you can take transit.
What kind of numbnuts would do it everyday?
I guess lazy ones, who gets fat and ugly by age of 40, and complain about it to everybody.
And don't give me that BS about your ladder or bag of tools. I've seen people driving downtown at 8.30 AM, and none of them had any of this stuff. |
I had to go to Jarvis and Adelaide every day for a year from Mississauga...
Why did I drive??
Because I start at 7am... Sometimes 6:30am...
Do you have ANY idea what time I'd have to get out of the house to get all the way down there in time on transit???
My parking is paid for by the company...
I'd often have to go from one job to another...
There is no way in hell I'm taking transit to get to work...
It just doesn't work for me... |

| Keep the bike lanes coming. Believe it or not us bikers pay taxes for the roads we're supposed to share. So please let us have 30cm of space and off |

That's a pretty narrow view of the people that work downtown.

Indeed; however, if the goal is to get cars off the road (which it is) then it's the professional crowd that you need to target, as they are the ones driving into the core. The people Spam mentioned, while constituting a significant portion of the people working in the core, are by and large already taking transit. |

when you start paying peddling tax (gas tax for us), are forced to buy insurance, and require a license plate with a yearly sticker that costs $150, perhaps you can use this arguement. ;) |

Because, generally speaking, your selfish behaviour is a detriment to the environment around you.
Cyclists, on the other hand, don't use up non-renewable fossil fuels, don't pollute the air with exhaust, and don't take up nearly as much space as a vehicle that's intended for four but is only seating one. |

Man, how much time do some of you need in the morning? I never had to be up before 6am to make to an 830 class, taking the GO to York from Barrie. , 2 days a week I was going all the way to Scarborough for my community placement and I only had to be up a half hour earlier. Girls in my program who drove to school didn't ever make it there any faster or more conveniently - because of traffic. So while I was napping, getting work done, and saving money on the train; they were stressing out dealing with traffic and weather conditions, and throwing money away on gas and insurance.
I guess what I'm saying is that the GO is a great service. I got ed hard when I was given a clinical placement in Scarborough (I specified that I lived in Barrie and did not have a car), and if it weren't for the GO, I would have had a much more difficult time getting there. I don't even want to think about what time I'd have had to get up if I had to get downtown and TTC it. Ughhhh. |

So if your hours happen to be outside of the 2 trains that go from barrie in the morning and the 2 that go back at night, what then?
And how do you get to the GO station in Barrie?
What about people who have jobs and business to conduct that dont fall within the 9 to 5 range?
BTW an hour and a half from barrie to york, i can do it in 45 mins by car and maybe an hour if there is traffic. |

There's 4 trains both ways. And it's actually an hour from Barrie to York. I took the bus to the GO station or got a ride.
The latest train in the morning leaves here at 720. I can't remember how late the last one coming back leaves downtown, but it's past 5pm. I would imagine people that work later can just take the bus. |

Hey Malek is that hugger extraordinaire David Suzuki? :p
We had this discussion in MTLTA while back.
- Half the cyclists out there are idiots and hog driving lanes, run red lights, stop signs, etc.
- Aside from environmental concerns, people DO need to get exercise and get out of their cars, get off the computers (ironically :p) and off the couch watching TV. Society is becoming too unhealthy, too obese with diabetes rates rising from inactivity, etc. I'm surprised the nurse hasn't mentioned that one yet :p
- 80 per cent of the 4,000 ppl I work with in downtown Ottawa take transit, about 5 per cent bike ride to work (myself included). Pretty much all of us can afford/have cars but choose to avoid the hassle and cost of finding parking downtown. These numbers may go up once we get our downtown tunnel. If we had your transit system it would be so much easier. It's all relative I guess.
- I have to read all the posts again, I've lost track of the point of this thread :p
- my alt is a fatty :p |

geezuz f. christ!! 2.5 hours!?!? And you don't think thats a problem?? Well, you're the perfect candidate for public transport.
I wake up at 7:40am and I'm at the office at 9:10am, that includes a subway ride and some walking. And I still think its too long:p |
