What the hell are you talking about? You sound like a relic from the 50s - just substitute "Leftie" with "Commie" and we're spot on.

Nice diversion tactic.

So you dont think that having someone tell you how to live and whats good for you, what kind of lifestyle you should live and then enforcing it by official policy and law is conformist?

Yeah, why would you want them experiencing the diversity of the downtown core when you can give them the safe, conformist dreck of the suburbs? ;)

that's what day trips are for

Bringing up McAurther is really the same as bringing up Hitler... as soon as you do so you've more or less disqualified yourself from further discussion. Jayx1 suggests that persons on the left of the spectrum are intolerant of opposing views and your response is to try and characterize him as being a close minded bigot for having an opposing view. Sounds like he was pretty spot on in your case.

Try using rational counters to address his arguments and we might get somewhere; however, this style of discourse where rather then listening and discussing we all simply wait around for a chance to throw out a biting one liner is nothing more then a waste of time and demonstative that you view your position as sufficiently weak that your best strategy is to brow beat people into agreement or silence. Your "dreck of the suburbs" comment is another good example of this.

What policy/policies are you referring to, exactly, and who's running around enforcing it? No one in recent memory has come a-knockin' on our door questioning our lifestyle, and the last political notice I received was one of those stupid, wasteful "tell us how great we are!" mailouts from the NDP, which I politely scrawled " joo, meng" on and mailed it back on their quarter.

Seriously man, when you consistently tout the "Leftie Agenda" as the reason for your pissed-offedness, you make yourself out to be rather narrow-minded in scope. The issues we deal with on a day-to-day basis are human issues; "left", "right", are simply words we use to distract us from that fact, to the point where no one knows where the middle lies anymore.

Your ideas have a lot of validity and I certainly agree with much of what you see as being necessary to improve this city, but you make it out to be that your instructions are the only way to go in order to right the listing ship. Total turnoff.

As promised, the DOT is moving quickly on a plan to radically transform 34th Street to prioritize buses and pedestrians over passenger cars. The proposal [pdf], which was completed at the end of February, would essentially cut 34th Street in half, with the section west of Sixth Avenue running one way toward the Hudson River, and the section east of Fifth Avenue running one way toward the East River. Buses would travel in both directions in their own special lanes, and in the middle there will be another pedestrian plaza on the block between Fifth and Sixth, the part of town informally known as Cluster City.

"It’s going to improve the mobility along the corridor," NYC DOT commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan tells the Times. "We expect the bus travel times to improve by up to 35 percent, which is something that up to 33,000 passengers that currently travel crosstown will appreciate." Sadik-Khan points to a study showing that only 10 percent of people traveling along 34th Street use cars or taxis, while the rest walk or use public transportation. Thus, faster bus service will benefit "the majority of the people who are actually using the street."

As part of the "Transitway" plan, bus passengers would be able to buy tickets at sidewalk kiosks, and buses would be equipped with devices that signal traffic lights to remain green as the bus approaches an intersection. The DOT is meeting with the Community Board 6 transportation committee on May 3rd, and expects the project to be completed by the end of 2012, to the tune of $30 million.

Naturally, there are concerns. At a public hearing last night, one woman who resides on 34th Street descried the plan because it might block the loading zone for her building and make it less convenient for her to get deliveries. Local merchants are currently contemplating the proposal, and Dan Biederman, president of the 34th Street Partnership, supports it "for the most part." But he's warning fellow business owners to "please complain right now, or within the next few weeks. This is not your father’s D.O.T. This agency says they do something and they do it." Crazy, right?

Thanks for all the kind words, but you're missing the part earlier in the thread where I said that I actually think he has some fairly intelligent ideas.

errr, wha --- are they installing bike lanes and making it law that anyone who commutes less than 20k to work must now ride on them or something? did I miss the memo?

Speaking of New York. Jay, how do you feel about charging tolls to 905'ers who work in the downtown core? Would that be a viable way to fund all the transportation infrastructure improvements you would like to see?
