We had this discussion in MTLTA while back.
- Half the cyclists out there are idiots and hog driving lanes, run red lights, stop signs, etc.
- Aside from environmental concerns, people DO need to get exercise and get out of their cars, get off the computers (ironically :p) and off the couch watching TV. Society is becoming too unhealthy, too obese with diabetes rates rising from inactivity, etc. I'm surprised the nurse hasn't mentioned that one yet :p
- 80 per cent of the 4,000 ppl I work with in downtown Ottawa take transit, about 5 per cent bike ride to work (myself included). Pretty much all of us can afford/have cars but choose to avoid the hassle and cost of finding parking downtown. These numbers may go up once we get our downtown tunnel. If we had your transit system it would be so much easier. It's all relative I guess.
- I have to read all the posts again, I've lost track of the point of this thread :p
- my alt is a fatty :p |
I love cycling too, I actually take the bixi on my way back home if weather permits the most north i can (30-40mins) then i take the subway.
But you have to realize we are young, and not everyone has a good enough health to do it, or not everyone has the privileges of having showers/lockers at work.
The real debate here is that cyclists and drivers should not be segregated on the streets.
Both have to acknowledge the existence of the other and drive/bike respectfully.
I'm affraid that segregating them, will make ther others oblivious of their presence, which imo even more dangerous.
People need learning to share the streets. |

| I'm up at 6:30 and at work by 7:30 and I think that is too long for my 30 km drive to work. |

| I'm up at 5, leave at 5:45 and in the office by 6:30ish... 98km drive. I checked what it would take me on the go bus; 2.5 hours and with the schedule the first bus doesn't get me to work until after 7:30. Me thinks the car is my better option. |

geezuz f. christ!! 2.5 hours!?!? And you don't think thats a problem?? Well, you're the perfect candidate for public transport.
|
I don't spend that time commuting. I shower and get ready, eat, do whatever else I have to do in the morning within that time, too. My commute is only about an hour. |

when you start paying peddling tax (gas tax for us), are forced to buy insurance, and require a license plate with a yearly sticker that costs $150, perhaps you can use this arguement. ;) |
HA! No . I worked it out and with gas, insurance, sticker, tax, bla bla bla, Im over 400 a month just to get my sorry ass to a job I hate.

lol, we have the same exact schedule, wake up and office arrival even. My bike ride is a measly 15 mins to work though |

Guys we get it, there are legitimate people who need a car, who travel out of regular biz hours...etc. But the vast majority of people are not carrying monitors to work, or jumping from client to client, or going form Barrie to some obscure place in Scarborough.
The fact remains, road capacity is not going to increase ever.
You want to drive and take up road space, and say too bad to others. Well people want to ride their bikes, and things are changing, so suck it up.
Plus for the people complaining in this thread, how many of you live in Toronto? How many of you use Uni Ave on the regular? Jay, last I heard you weren't living in the downtown core. So you have what right as an inhabitant of another city? |

| Hey I'm not saying people shouldn't drive cars, I don't really give a what other people do. I'm just saying I think the GO is a great service and I'd be ed without it, as I choose not to own a car. |

I lived downtown and hated it so i moved. Id love to come back downtown but not the way things are now. (and getting worse)
What right do i have? Considering i still do some of my work downtown, and considering a lot of services are only provided downtown, and considering that GTA regions have to pay a cost share to Toronto every year (my taxes) i have a right to voice my concern over the city. |

To all of you living in suburbs, get your own place already and move out of your mamas basement.
Nobody forced you to work downtown and live in middle of God knows where.
YOU made this choice, it's Canada, not CCCP 40 years ago.
Deal with it, and stop blaming cyclists for all bad stuff happening to you.
BTW, talking about traffic rules, how many of you didn't speed today? Actually observed posted speed limit? I thought so.
How many of you stopped for 3 seconds on that stop sign? Not rolling stop, real 3 sec stop?
I rest my case.
Also, I hope they gonna do this here too:

You are right...nobody forces you to live in the suburbs and work downtown but many people cannot afford to buy a house near the downtown core. I make 6 figures and there is no way I could afford a house like I have in Milton if I lived downtown. I wouldn't want to raise a family living in the downtown core.
As far as I'm concerned cyclists are nothing but a pain in the ass but I respect their right to use the road. Now how about the cyclists stop blaming vehicles for all the crap that happens to them and deal with it. Both sides are equally to blame for the crap that happens. |
