misleading, considering russians have conscription and pay their soldiers wages. |
Why is military service has to be about wages? I always thought it's about paying dues to your country. Which I did, BTW.
| quote: | | IIRC, Canada spends about 50% of its budget on personnel salaries |
Fair enough, let's do some simple math, shall we?
$19,500,000,000/2=$9,750,000,000/62,000=$157,258
OK, where do I sign up for easy job, which pays more than 150 grand a year? Let me guess, canadian military :)
Get your facts straight please. |

We really should stop giving away blank cheque's to Mr. Harper. He is clearly out of control and needs to be contained. Canada can do so much better with this amount of money but too bad this government doesn’t seem to get its priorities straight... |
and which government does have it's priorities straight? the blame falls on the shoulders of the people for being so apathetic. |

I agree with you, almost all governments are corrupt one way or another but that doesn't mean we have to sit back and bow down our heads and let them get away with everything.
I swear more and more people are becoming like sheep with no voice and blindly accept everything from their government. |

Six questions about the jet fighters
Green Party of Canada, Press Release | Friday, July 16th, 2010 at 2:25 pm
Press Release
For Immediate Release
July, 16 2010
OTTAWA – The Government’s announcement regarding the purchase of 65 F-35 fighter jets from Lockheed-Martin raises a number of questions and concerns. Elizabeth May, Leader of the Greens, says that these are questions for which Canadians deserve an answer.
Where is the security policy rationale for $9 billion in fighter jets?
What happened to the additional $7 billion contract in maintenance?
In what scenario are we fighting air to air combat?
Why have we ignored the criticism in the US Congress of Lockheed-Martin on these very jets for 50% cost over-runs, to date?
What happened to the spending freeze in the defence budget to fight the deficit?
What are the opportunity costs of this giant spending spree while Canada’s schools close, health care suffers, infrastructure crumbles, and greenhouse gases soar?
“The opposition party – the Liberals – have already indicated that this deal will be reviewed and potentially cancelled if they are elected. It therefore becomes the fiscal responsibility of the Conservatives – as a minority government on the eve of an election – to ensure that any contract signed has a no-penalty opt-out for at least one year. Failure to do this due diligence will reflect directly on the Conservatives and they will be the ones held accountable for any future penalties,” said Eric Walton, International Affairs critic.

Good questions but will the conservatives have any answers?:o |

Check this out, with military budget only twice as big as Canadian, russians have sometimes 10 to 20 or even 30 times more active weaponry.
Couple billions won't do with prices you're paying here for R&D, hourly salaries and so on.
And bunch of overpriced planes are not gonna help either.

I dont understand your point here. Its not about who has a bigger dick here, Canada or Russia. Russia will never even dare to attack Canada with Yankees behind their backs. But we Canadians dont have a single damn frigate patrolling out Arctic waters, thats my point. If we have enough ships there to cover the borders and territory, that will be enough to repel any sightseers or unwanted tourists. If anyone dares to with Canada, Americans will 'em up. Even Putin knows this.

Are you actually blaming the Canadian military because 100 Russians die from heroin addiction??? |
Actually, its not just 100. Not even 1000. More than 10,000. And not just Russians. There are around 1-2 million heroin addicts in Russia alone, as well as huge numbers in Central Asian republics, and a huge drug flow to Europe as well. Its a massive epidemic, massive problem. If anything, NATO and their allies have allowed this trade to grow and expand ... funding Taliban and killing people. There are ways of dealing with this serious problem - successful methods - but Americans and their friends dont care.
Look it up - Thailand used to the world's biggest heroin exporter, and they fixed that problem pretty darn well, didnt they? That whole dam area used to be a heaven for heroin ... Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, you name it. Then Americans withdrew from Vietnam, wars ended, massive heroin exports stopped. Most of you dont know about that.

You'd be really stupid to think in modern days, people join the military for purely patriotic reasons.
I don't presumed to speak for members of CF, but it's kinda hard to keep esp your experienced and highly trained specialists to private sector if they can't feed their families. Competitive wages (and challenges of military life) helps with retention.

lol. I should have been more clearer. Not just wages, but also benefits, welfare, housing infrastructure, allowances, health care, etc. Yeah, Canada decided that treating their military members well is a pretty good thing. (And no different than benefits from major corporations)
Easy job? I went to 2 ramp ceremonies for 3 soldiers killed in Afghanistan in last 5 weeks, |

And here's another big difference - in Russia if 3 soldies are killed - no biggie, while in Canada - everyone knows their names, and people gather on highway overpasses to pay tribute to the fallen heroes. Pictures and stories in newspapers, everything. Every life matters.
In Russia every year more soldiers die from suicides, alcohol, abuse and murder than on front lines of war.

So back to topic of our discussion, how does expensive plane with all bells and whistles is gonna help cf to win fight against that evil taliban dude with AK-47, who's 15000 km away from Canada?
| quote: | | If anyone dares to with Canada, Americans will 'em up. Even Putin knows this. |
So, what's a point of buying these planes, big brother will always protect canadian oil, or fresh water, or whatever else they don't have.
Why spend 16 bil. with deficit running right now at 54?
Reminds me of Greece, country which is technically bankrupt, but still upgrading its military forces:)
What do you think happens, when you invade sovereign country and start killing innocent people? Few of your soldiers might get killed in process too. Yep, it might come as a surprise to you, but it's reality.
BTW, personal insults are sure way to get opponent to hear your point of view. |

If only.
Immigrants... 1st... 2nd... generation Canadians that do any small or big crime should be sent back to whatever hole their family left. Even if they beg that they will be killed when they get back home or even if your a 3rd generation Canadian and your branded a "terrorist" you should have your citizenship revoked and be sent back to whatever country your family left.
Thats one thing I cant stand about Canada. We let in people and give them shelter and when they do something wrong they pull the "I am going to get killed when I get home card" Who cares. Not our problem. You should have played by our rules. Dumb ass!
