Define breakdown though. Are you talking about the breakdowns that stop a track dead in its tracks to introduce the main melody, or are you talking about a breakdown that is exclamation point of a long build?

Breakdown it's generally beatless, a relaxed part into the track often on the middle of it, there are some tracks that have a very short one, it could be even a silence just to change from melody A to melody B suddenly, you can use contrapoint melodies and fade melody A at some point... but as Eddie said breakdowns are a necessary evil, don't need to struggle your mind so much when people love breakdowns.
But i won't be arguing anymore, some people here only use 2 words in every statement "No,idiot" so won't bother writing something legible when some people are limited to understand it.

Intention? What good is intention when you're arguing about a song, the predominant make-up of which is a single 16-bar loop with different tracks being muted or unmuted throughout its duration?
