They are bigger. I will give you that. But it's not the trendy thing to do in LA. Don't get me wrong I have had plenty of fun in NY at Resolute or Blackmarket parties. Great line-ups. But our parties are truly more underground. |

get over it guys!
you all have a different opinion. Can we go back to arguing about what artists is better or what genre, all while insulting the other persons opinion? |

| It is nothing more than major names to bring in major money. It will never have the experience Ibiza, (and quite frankly) many other places hold. |

| I won't comment on an EDM capital but I will give love to the SF underground scene. Still thriving since the 80s/90s. |

Let's not forget a huge factor in judging an EDM scene: The Audience. The Vegas crowd doesn't care if it's EDM or not, me thinks. I don't think you even need DJs there, I went to a popular hot club there only to find out they were playing a mixtape with no DJ. The crowd didn't care at all and had a great time.
Anyways, I imagine it would be hard for a local Vegas scene to happen. Vegas just seems much more competitive to get gigs in because it's Vegas. |

I think this past summer, Vegas had a lot of good events and pool parties. But yeah, I agree with what everyone else said - Vegas (and the US in general) is a lot more about being seen, bottle service, etc. There are a lot less die hard fans here. When I was in Ibiza, EVERYONE loved the music, a lot of people knew the music and the words, and it was a completely different atmosphere. However since OP wants to talk about the top destination in the US... let's shift the discussion to the US only.
The problem in Vegas is that they have some big headliners coming through, and Tiesto and Oakenfold residencies are pretty huge (btw Markus was technically a Rain resident in 2009; he played there 4 times in the year I think). But still, during the week, on a random ass Monday or Thursday, I doubt you could find a decent EDM experience. And even if you could, it's probably just at one club.
Los Angeles is a place that has something going on almost every night; we've had a lot of good names come through on a Monday (MNS) or Wednesday (ecco) or Thursday (giant's OC nights) Friday/Saturday (duh). I don't think Vegas has this type of thing going on. So I will have to say Los Angeles but I honestly don't know much about NY so I can't compare but as far as festivals go they only have Electric Zoo... I went to Miami over summer and they had some decent stuff going on but not as vibrant as LA, in my opinion.
So if we're talking mecca in the sense of a city that always has something going on, big to small, I would say right now LA seems to be the clear winner.
Vegas does seem to be slowly emerging as a big player for big names. Last year they had some epic lineups for Memorial/Labor day and 4th of July; this year they already have residencies for Oakenfold (rain), Tiesto (Hard Rock), Kaskade and Morillo (both Marquee) and I'm sure they'll have more stuff going on as the economy recovers and as Cosmopolitan and City Center take off. If they have agood local scene develop then they definitely will have a shot. Oh and if they lock down that Pauly D residency then it's 100% on. |

Pauly D has NOTHING to do with good dance music.
I'd listen to cheesy europop over the that idiot plays any day. |

| Austin, a sleeper city that needs to be recognized as no one has mentioned. |

| Vegas? No. But one thing comes to mind about LA. We've all heard about the "rave ban bill", if this were to pass, how much do you think it would affect EDM? Excluding underground. |

Wow dude, You're really gonna post that in the West Coast Forums?
LA has a ton of undergrounds and bigger doesn't necessarily mean better. I appreciate all the small warehouse parties and outdoor parties we have in LA.

Laughing at all the haters in here....
what we have done in the past and what we are working hard to get done in the future I am seriously proud of....
If it wasn't for a few of us in this town with a passion to really get behind things who knows where things would be today.
Hate if you want.............in the end what we are doing here is amazing and soon enough we will have somehitng very special.....you will see. |
lol it's not hating buddy :p
There's nothing wrong with Las Vegas bringing in big dance acts, but the fact of the matter is that it will never be more than a destination city for a handful of people. A place to see or be seen, but definitely not a place that will be a proper "dance music capital".
I think NYC will edge out LA only because there are a lot more labels, producers, djs, parties etc. coming out of there at the moment. Even moreso because of the disco edit craze hitting its high right now, New York is really the only place that never completely abandoned disco...well New York and Finland. San Francisco will definitely be on its way in the next year or so. Some solid acts up there that need their recognition. |
