AIRO, Egypt — Egypt's vice-president says Hosni Mubarak has resigned as president and handed control to the military.
Car horns were heard around Cairo in celebration after Vice-President Omar Suleiman made the announcement on national TV on Friday.
"In these difficult circumstances that the country is passing through, President Hosni Mubarak has decided to leave the position of the presidency," Suleiman said. He has commissioned the armed forces council to direct the issues of the state." |

I liked this vice presidents speech yesterday. Why can't he run things till September??

Armies are quite often known to take control in the midst of a transition phase. Very normal for these countries and it's nothing to be alarmed about. Someone has to do it and if it's not the army it's generally wealthy business people or even a more bias group.
Population sees the VP as the same as Mubarak, which he more or less is. So no that's not an option and I'm sure he'll be stepping down sooner than later as well. |

| He shouldn't have stepped down. My concern is how many other countries are now going to use these tactics to overturn their governments? This could be a very deadly way to try and make change in a country. |

I wish it were that simple but right now the army has the biggest say in who becomes the next leader. The army is also well known to be connected to the States and they receive billions in military "aid" from them. Mubarak was supported by the States until this whole thing came about so anyone who thinks that they're going to pick a true representative of the Egyptian people is overly optimistic imo.
You're going to get a slightly better and less ruthless version of Mubarak with the exact same ideologies. They're going to give the people the bare minimum of what they need to be quieted and that is that. |

Right, and what is wrong with the people saying enough is enough to their corrupted governments? Are you afraid that once a new leadership takes over that it will not be pro west? The people in the Middle East are sick and tired of these American puppets as their leaders.

States won't let that happen... You'd need an Iranian type deal where the military itself wants the States removed and in this case that is the opposite. |
