Anyway it's a little early to know exactly how this system will perform.
Circus's Main room is kind of small, and the ceilings are very low. There's not much sound space to 'fill'. The sound just as to be accurate, not loud. Extra renovations are also done according to the sound system, so it really all depends on how it fits with the acoustics of the room.
Then hopefully all DJs will be careful of volumes and quality.
Even if I think the sound of the Pioneer DJM 2000 is a much improvement on the 800, I still hope we will be able to use something a little 'fatter' so that the high notes are not so harsh on the ears.
I say bring back this baby and I'll play for free ;-)

Honestly, I defy you to find any club where the sound, on average, is at a level where you wouldn't sustain hearing damage if you were there for a prolonged period of time without earplugs.
All clubs play the music at volume levels that are too high, and technically you "need" earplugs no matter where you go. |
Old Stereo's sound system. I'd be there all night and walk out with zero ringing or muffled hearing. Not the case anymore unfortunately. |

dude. they do, lol. i've been 3 times & every time, earplugs were needed for myself & even the DJs that had just played after about an hour or two of being on the dancefloor. it's a fkn great system but it hurts because of the brisk, cold sharpness of it.
and anyways, you can't compare berghain's funktion 1 with circus' funktion 1 or any other club's funktion 1 for that matter. that system will sound different depending on the room it's put in, what that room is made of, how high/low ceilings are, etc (as is the case with any sound system...)
oh, edit! in response to the mnml.nl thread, i also did not have ringing in my ears. i'm not saying my ears were totally shot after 10 hours of being there. i'm just saying in the moment, on the floor, it can hurt, that's all. moving to a quieter location is definitely key if you wanna last the night. |
my point was that ask a guy at berghain if you need earplugs and he's gonna probably ask for you to be deported lol they are really fussy about their system. Well this is what Chris Liebing told me last time he was in town, when I asked questions about their system there. Sorry if i misinterpreted what he told me. He said you won't have any ear problems or permanent damage and it is also less tiring than any other system (when you spend a night there, not if your head is in the speaker for 10 hours). Your brain doesn't have to fill out the blanks in the sound of a less efficient system. |

i experienced the funktion one at a club in beijing (gt banana) where i stayed for about 5 hours. woke up the next morning and i had the worst case of hearing loss, i couldn't even hear what somebody was saying 3 feet in front of me (not saying this is guaranteed but that was my experience). the sound quality is truly amazing but i think the club and/or dj was playing the volume a little too loud.
that being said, huge props to circus for constantly improving their venue and bringing great talent to montreal. looking forward to visit after renovations have been completed... |

| I've decided that I need to check out the way they configured it, so the first booking that looks like something for me, i'll pop by for an hour or 2. Did you guys totally reconfigure the main room? (haven't been to circus in 3 years here) |

Imo the sound is really loud and really clear. But after 5-6 hours, I really need earplugs if I want to continue to enjoy the sound there.. I wouldnt stay a whole day there without earplugs, or at least if it would be the case and I don't have some with me, I would go a lot to pbar to relax my ears. |

that's why they offer earplugs right? ok.
have you ever even been there yourself? because your name-dropping only gets you so far.
last time i say this cuz i'm tired of repeating myself & my posts being responded to entirely out of context: funktion 1 is a great system, one of the best on the market today. it will vastly improve what the club you work for has to offer. i can't wait to hear it.
it just hurts sometimes, that's all, amen <3 |
