New Year's Eve in Montreal (pg. 14)

Promoters and owners are business people. New Years is the biggest revenue of the year for most clubs.

So what would you do?

A. Take a risk a book a niche DJ to appease some people on the Internet?

B. Or book an artist that will maximize revenue?

Tough call...

Wow guys. Sad, funny and true things being said in here!

Can we look at it this way? Every booker has their place in the scene.

Events meant for thousands like the yearly raves can't afford to book niche artists because simply not that many people will recognize the name and who wants to go to a giant venue with 200 ppl in it? The party will suck, the DJ will suck and anyone who did come won't be impressed.

Igloo has its own branding and other perks on offer so that brings them half the people and they can afford to be slightly more ahead with the bookings, but they too have to bring masses to hold up the event. Piknic has more days throughout the year, so they can afford to be more risky cuz they can win some and lose some, and because people will have fun no matter what happens in the booth at piknic cuz the vibe is so good. It's a great place to introduce arty names. Let's not forget the government funding that gave them the time to build their brand too.

Stereo and Circus are responsible for introducing the scenesters and the constant stream of new comers (people who are slowly sinking underground and may or may not know it yet) to the big names and the big locals. That crowd creates a buzz or a following for a certain artist who can then come back for a massive. These places also take the tourists and keep montreal on the map with a steady roster of recognizable names of various levels and mix it up to cater to the different scenes/sounds. They repeat names and build traditions and give locals the chance to play with internationals and on big sound. Sometimes they can spend on a giant booking to promote the club, sometimes they cash in on a festive night. They have to stay alive right?

Then we have clubs like Daome and UN where beat boutique, safari, 13% can bring us the cutting edge. These bookers act according to their personal taste/niche and I think they've been doing a great job and keeping us satisfied as a city on top of its game (in North America). These events keep mtl's locals inspired by fresh sounds and educate a *fraction* of the scene. It will be years before that education effect trickles to the rest of the city, and by then some of those 'fresh' artists will be massive, and after a glory year or two, they'll join the ranks of the sell outs playing generic sets at massives. It's the cycle of life. These places keep a balance of low-mid-high level locals too, giving some people their first chances at a popular club, allowing the rest to have a place to play regularly and pay the bread and butter to up and comers too. (Circus Gallery/The Box? has an interesting place here too)

MUTEK showcases cutting edge to large crowds because it's specifically recognized as such. A lot of cities don't have that at all, and again, it's funded.

Finally we have the start-up nights where grassroots DJs gather their friends and play for the first time ever. Few dollars are made but experience is built to prep the baby locals for the next level and other locals either give the night a promo push or stay close to their fan followings in between other gigs.

Let us accept that the scene would be DEAD if we lost ANY of these.

And YES, of course, some players are doing a better job than others but overall, NO, baby locals will not have their debut at Stereo. NO, avant-garde genius artists with only 3 productions on beatport will not play at Bal en Blanc, NO Circus won't waste all its money on monster bookings on NYE, NO Igloo won't ignore the growing hipster scene.

IN BRIEF:

1. Please have realistic expectations of each booker taking its place in the scene and you won't be so disappointed and personally offended over Bell Center line ups.

2. Know your own place in the scene too. Are you one of the masses or one of the elite or an old timer or an up and comer? A lot of things will make sense accordingly.

Sorry for the lecture, I know at least half the people on this forum know much more about this than me. As a curious girl, this is what I've understood. Maybe the guys who've been doing this for years can correct me if I'm wrong :) I just don't get why people get so shocked every time a very expected and sensible line up comes out!

Don't apologize for giving this board what it needs more of :)

And I couldn't agree more on your last line. People here need to stop seeing the massive events as being responsible for catering to the tastes of those with more refined tastes. I actually think some do realize that, they just think it makes them look cool to complain.
