its pretty pointless anyway, the crowd is always uneducated, i can bring them a certain vibe that is very niche, but im very weary that they will enjoy it as much as i do. which brings me to my idea of building a community starting this summer, but i dont even think its worth all the hard work.
i can play cheesey and when i djed this summer i usually dumbed my sets down in some sort of way.

Define cheesy? I don't think a dj should ever ply something he doesn't love, but therein lies that essential component of broad tastes. Play what you love from each genre and there will always be tracks, that are not cheese turds that will please the crowd and showcase your taste.
As far as educating acrowd. Dance music is rather superficial. I honestly don't think one requires any sort of education to appreciate a good track.

perhaps i shouldn't of had said cheesey there but for the record i can enjoy some cheese, like the stuff i grew up on at age 13-14 or so, euro dancey euro trance whatever it is, i dont discard that .
i meant more clubby fun stuff which is reasonable, since you ARE doing that. to be able to go into the depths of my heart right away would be impossible and kind of stupid to do when you're not known for anything. have no promotion etc. doesn't sit well in my mind, and yes i would like to provide a good experience.
an example here.
and my online shows differ, i go into my passion, different mixing styles, i only just cdjs live but work hard to provide awesome transitions.

See that track is poor , vocals are lame, and the sound effects are tacky but is it the genre or this track. There must be some tracks in this type of genre thatflotyour boat.
I just don't think short of being an event headliner will you ever be ableto be a club dj that plays a genre.
I mean Michael Jackson thriller, do you like that track? Is it something everyone will like, is it cheesy ? I suppose if you are. Just plying top 10s then , even a dj can ruin thriller but you can't expect people to enjoy 4 hours of progressive. It just doesn't work in. Clubs.
A good dj has a lot of tracks he/ she likes, and then picks tracks people will enjoy. If your reson for plying a trck is, I like it, djing isn't for you.

Last good experience I hadwasactually at lounge and this guy was playing a mix of old school funk, the old classic rap, some new hip hop that had these really cool electronic aesthetics but still more funk than like that awful south crunk or whatever the they call it. But he was playing alot of tracks nobody knew but always anchored it with something you could bite into. Some djs don't seem to understand people like hooks. That doesn't mean you have to play hook after hook as that reduces the effect but it is really unfair to just play what would seem to most a 3 hour track.
I also should tell you I was a dj. I had 5500 records by the time I quit. So I do have some perspective based on actual experience as a club dj, as a "rave" dj.

I think some people just get too attached to a genre and they let it define them. You probably have more broad tastes than you think but have developed this weird relationship with a genre in that you feel like you ow it, and being an expert feels good but the lack of interest in anything else is more to do with how you are perceived rather thn your actual tastes. Everyone that has genre tunnel vision suffers from this.

oh nice one, but i do not suffer from pigeonholing. 126-132 bpm is my favourite to dance to its my very much prefered tempo. ive recently done a drum & bass set that was very well liked by most people, i listen to all sorts of , progressive owns the depths of my hearts however(incorporates everything i love about edm, tempo, amtosphere, melody, drive, groove. please dont talk to me about taste looney :haha:
funny you say "rave" although you probably dont mean the same thing as me, but music even 10 years ago was much more mysterious, and i very much want this "ravey" sound to come back. and no im not talking about some high bpm . well at least i tried having a serious conversation with you, probably shouldn't of had though.

Because djing ata rave , and djing at a club were 2 very different things. You didn't approach them thesameway. And they were raves. Different crowd, different substances. I literally meant rave as in an all night all ages dance event in some location not meant for what it was used for. Nt really funny. This was a long time ago.
