I think you guys should settle your differences and play one on one at the next gig :D

I see a lot of pigeon holeing in denver. DJ X plays genres Y and Z. Or DJ A B and C playing Dubstep night(or whatever). I've seen flyers with the genres listed next to the DJ name.

*Go to DJ's promo myspace page* "I play out progressive and psy duck trance."

Pretty much every DJ set is categorized in the promo section.

Djs could do o much but usually settle on something a monkey could do. I would make the same argument with most producers. Smarter monkey? Sure but they both like throwing feces.

Ido think djing is for 30 and younger.

Man, you are one high and mighty mother ******. Your ego in almost all your posts flares out like bad acne. Sometimes you just sound like an outright liar, too. Anyhow, there are plenty of magnificent DJs I listen to, some of them are friends of mine, and a couple of them have been DJing for over 20 years. I know where to go when I want to hear new, fresh, groovy and amazing tunes - consistently. So it's not a matter of just listening to bad DJs, it's the matter of electronic music and DJing being so trendy and accessible everyone and their mother's dog is a DJ now. Too much saturation, not enough quality.

I think some people just get too attached to a genre and they let it define them. You probably have more broad tastes than you think but have developed this weird relationship with a genre in that you feel like you ow it, and being an expert feels good but the lack of interest in anything else is more to do with how you are perceived rather thn your actual tastes. Everyone that has genre tunnel vision suffers from this.
You do have some smart insight!

Yes beatmatching isnt the hardest thing in the world anymore, but picking the right tracks that make the night, and making them work together, while keeping it interesting - not just putting on a 'itunes playlist' - isnt just a walk in the park.. Also consider the rigs of today - you have a significant amount of creative tools at your disposal - filters, effects, sampling, multi decks etc. This, i would argue, is akin to a form of producing - except live and you cant just go back and retry.. if you mess up, people know it. instantly...

I DJ'ed for 5-6 years in college and after - the usual top 40 stuff, a bit of edm, some oldies etc.. Free drinks, lots of ladies - all that :) Good times - wasnt hard at all. I'm now into pure edm and try to study what the "pro's" do.. and its a completely different game. I seriously admire some of our locals here on TA that i've met and heard live - they put real time into it, not just a random tour-de beatport top 10 ...

All that said, yes producing is a ton of work, skills and creative genius too.. Just thought someone should chime in with some thoughts on why DJ'ing now isnt 'just beatmatching some tracks' up on a higher level. As with most things you can do it 'ok' pretty easy, but being in the top tier takes serious skill/effort in my opinion.

No, I completely agree. Just because EVERYONE is a DJ now doesn't mean there aren't the truly gifted DJs out there. This moron I know was posting on FB about how he's doing an end of year mix and he needs 2-3 more tracks and if anyone had suggestions. Someone suggested a track by Morgan Page, a new one, and he goes, "but that wasn't top 10 once last year!". Total ing idiot DJ. Then, I'm at a holiday dinner 2 nights ago and this ing joke kid who just moved out to LA, he's just climbed into the womb of dance music and is taking a big there. We're talking about DJing and he's like, "Yeah, the pros figure out what they're going to play before they go to the show" like figuring out your setlist before you even get there. I was kinda buzzing and didn't let him off the hook, and I even had to tell him about "reading the crowd". The horror, why should anyone have to EXPLAIN that to anyone? Especially someone who is supposedly a DJ himself? He's going to "play" for an hour with me and a couple other guys on New Years at our party, I wonder if he's going to make a bag setlist before he shows up. I consider the reaming I dealt to him minor, considering that if he ever starts sounding like a complete fool like that in front of anyone who knows anything substantive about DJing or parties, they would have ripped him twice as hard as I did. Then to prove his point he starts mentioning people like Nero, because apparently they do the same thing. Then I shut him down, saying Pete Tong (various epic DJs I've seen over time) know how to read a crowd and what you're talking about is ing blasphemy!

same thing going on with producing lol. not to say i'm not participating in the saturation of the market, but there's a thousand beatport trance releases per day (okay, maybe an exageration...or not??). so in response to your OP....

everyone's in it now and unless you stand out from the crowd in both areas, you're in it too.
