How about not know just about most songs being played?
Just about never listen to any of this canned (too much else to listen to that way), so only get them from live exposure, way fun... |
I listen to music almost every waking minute. Wake up, driving, etc. The only time I get a reprieve now is at work because we're not supposed to. |

I will always have a soft spot for Oakie, and yea is seems like he's taking it in an opposite direction for the most part. I must admit he wasn't always good but getting better in the last couple of years. |

Others here don't like it, but putting up with the preening need-to-be-seen crowd at places like Provo / Le Bain/ Lavo, you name it, I find by far worse. |
F those places, I don't really consider them legit venues. They're undeserving of the title "dance club". Shame this city's got nothing better other than warehouse parties and small spots like Sully and LPR. |

I agree. Every time I see a cool booking get booked at one of those venues, I mentally write it off. No interest really. |

Plus most events are free/cheap bef. midnight, and they don't vet. Others here don't like it, but putting up with the preening need-to-be-seen crowd at places like Provo / Le Bain/ Lavo, you name it, I find by far worse |
Kind of a false dichotomy. It's not like your only choice of clubs are Pacha OR models 'n' bottles. You have Sully, Santos, Cielo (MPD but quite legit, imho), I'm sure I'm forgetting some.
When I started going out, Pacha wasn't that bad to me either. But after a few years, it really starts to wear thin. It's also a matter of going to really good parties at other venues and realizing how much bull you've been putting up with just because you thought there were no alternatives.
I have the sneaking suspicion the people who like Pacha are relatively new to going out, or are the very ones who make me dislike it. |

I mean, they say no to hundreds of people's money on a nightly basis, and for the most part, as venues, they aren't even that good. Hell, Lavo's a restaurant during the day, and the format of most of these places is terrible. |

Agreed on principle. I'd add Public Assembly, the "concert venues" like MHW, BBowl, BoweryBallroom, NuBlu (Moby there was really fun), and yes (boy I'll get flak for this one) Webster.
True too that all of the above are not huge.
Main point for me though is, I don't go to clubs to catch whatever is playing there, I go to a certain musician/artist, at whatever venue that turns out to be. Putting the horse before the cart, unlike the models 'n bottle crowd.
I just don't find Pacha THAT distasteful, even though it is also too small and easily overcrowded. But whatever, if someone is there that I want to see, I can put up with it. The crowd almost never bothers me, especially the kid-crowd that so many complain about, because that all depends on your vantage.
Those places though that most agree are real places in Europe (in Berlin, London, Manchester, etc) do have horrible doors. Panorama gets great spinners, but getting to see them is another story. That's one of the silver linings on the Pacha thing for me.
>>...and realizing how much bull you've been putting up with
true for most of the "formal" places to some extent or another, unlike the warehouses, esp. concerning the "all exits are final" bull, the searches, etc.
The cake for me lately has been RCMH:
for Avicii (w/o me) they even announced metal detectors. Just waiting for the anal exam.
Or Hammerstein: even a lighter is confiscated? 2h wait to get in (Shpongle)?
Or how about the blatant "we make your wait miserable, but hey, buy our overpriced VIP ticket for easy access" bullsh*t so common now?
>>I have the sneaking suspicion the people who like Pacha ...
just don't dislike it that much as mentioned...
>>or are the very ones who make me dislike it.
hope not my fault :)
>>Every time I see a cool booking get booked at one of those venues,
>>I mentally write it off. No interest really.
ditto.
And its not as though the people who end up at those events are really the loyal core fan base that made those acts get to where they're being booked there in the first place.
(like BoysNoize records booking at LeBain )
>>as venues, they aren't even that good.
Indeed: too much of the smallish space given over to couches, tables, roped-off areas, its like you're dancing in the aisles.
JayZ's place is a perfect example |

I miss this aspect. There is such a humongous pool of songs out there, its a sin to hear a bunch of different DJ's play the same songs. I think I've heard six different DJ's in the last two months play The Box.
I think the new-age overall EDM crowd is find with this style of DJing and its ruined it for the people who expect what I/we like, to be taken on a journey through sound, to NOT know every song being played.
I feel like this is a broken record too, lol. |
The problem is there aren't a whole lot of underground Trance producers anymore. You have some insanely good progressive house guys who have done this and are now coming to the forefront (Maceo Plex), and some techno / tech-house guys are always innovating. But some of the Trance guys of late really just want to get played by Armin, and that definitely results in some conforming of the sound. Mind you I have nothing against Armin and his sound, but I was more content with "Trance" in 2009 when I could find a bunch of different variations.
Honestly the whole "genre" thing is getting pretty boring. I'm digging albums where people are experimenting again and listening to old Essential Mixes where the first 30 mins of a "trance" set was a mixture of breaks and ambient. |

ummmmm how can you compare marco plex in a trance thread saying he was trance? i dont think he was ever trance, then even put him in the same sentence as armin? :conf: :conf: :conf:
there are plenty of underground trance producers out there...some get signed, the others dont
either way alot of up and coming guys make music that armin or any other "sell out" big trance dj would play, in order to get exposure...
there is alot of good underground trance and prog out there....you just gotta dig deep and not look at what those slaves are playing |
