I appreciate what the people involved are trying to do, because I have been to this venue and it is incredible (plus I know and trust some of the people involved). However,
I couldn't have said it better myself. I'm not trying to hate on what Moskito or other promoters and venues in this city are trying to do, but what was said in the post above is precisely why for the past year or two I have have kept away from the venues and parties that I have been used to going to over the past several years. It's just the same DJs over and over (and over) again. The rare time I show up at one of these parties, people ask me if I still go out anymore. I do still go out, quite a lot actually. It's just that there are so many other things going on in dance music right now that I don't need to see the same DJ again for the 15th or 20th time (literally).
The reality is, there are quite a few new promotion groups in Toronto that are gaining a real foothold in the dance music market in this city, and especially with the younger generation. They do this by offering fresh, new bookings, and usually with acts that have never been to this city before, and play music that a lot of traditional promoters would consider "risky" to book. This is a completely different approach than the one we are used to, which is to book DJs which had a few big memorable parties back in the day, and then book them regularly for the next 10 years ala Dubfire, Lawler, Chus & Ceballos, etc. What's more, this new approach is an approach that's working.
I want to reiterate that I'm not trying to hate on what promoters in this scene are trying to do, because I know they're doing it to make this scene fun, show this city a good time, and give their clientele what they want. I respect that. I am just speaking my mind to challenge promoters to look beyond the tried and true to breath life into this scene. It's no secret that the crowd in this scene is getting a lot older, and as it stands right now, there isn't nearly enough of the younger generation to fill the gaps. |
First off i would like to congratulate promoters for the quality bookings and although I do agree with the repetitive bookings for one It would be nice to see headliners at a club other than footwork. I been going to footwork for years its nice to see another club booking some other djs...... But still hold the ultimate respect for footwork, thank you for all the wonderfull times most recently Chris Lieing... |

The one thing I have to mention about repeat bookings, is that it gives others a chance to possible relive or experience something they missed.
Ie. if all of you went to go see some DJ and I then read so many positive reviews on it the next day, and the party, I may consider and be looking forward to seeing that DJ in the near future. |

| I also gives you the opportunity to see different sides of a DJ. Many will not show this, but good ones will. |

100% Different venues, different accompanying DJs on bill, occasion... all can influence the DJ's style... |

I like (M)oskito. Ended up at the Sneak party on Saturday night for a bit.
Great vibe and a nice raw feeling. No pretentious.
Line up at the door - just asked the bouncer, "this is the sneak party right?" and he waved us past the line. That was alright.
Really looking forward to Danny Howells..... |

New, different, and risky are hard to pull off if you are going to be renting a downtown space in a fairly mature industry. Hell even the Guvernment has taken fewer risks in the last year, and they are as established, and financially secure as it gets.
The acts so far aren't exactly main stream, so getting DJs in that are even more underground feels a little like the law of diminishing results. Is it worth it to get somebody in, that will only appeal to a few chin strokers? Are those the clients that come back week after week, or once in a while?
I think it makes sense to get some solid, and well established acts in, build a solid base, steal some business, and then star doing some more risky nights. |

Couldn't agree more. Get a large group of people coming on a regular basis to trust your judgement and they will come to the weekends you have djs in they've never heard of |

New venue, promoters I like and respect, and one of my absolute favourite DJs and producers, who hasn't been booked in this city in 5 years...
Damn skippy! |
