James Holden - The Inheritors (Upcoming Album)

Named after a William Golding book, the album was crafted using Holden's analogue modular system and hand-coded computer programs, which he used to build a series of unique analogue-digital machines. The producer describes these machines as "complex, unpredictable beasts whose sole purpose was to be an expressive instrument for me to play a single song." He added: "There is something very Heath Robinson about the machines I build. Chaos systems with stable states and unstable states, modulating themselves as I fight to steer them. Everything is first takes. It was all a moment. It's recorded like folk music—no overdubs, no virtuosity. A man learnt some instruments to a basic standard and played them. Where needed, he sang."
In a press release, Holden cites the music of Elgar and the KLF's Chill Out as reference points for the LP, as well as "ceilidh music, pentatonic folk scales, and ancient pagan rituals." The Border Community boss also said: "In dance music you're face to face with redundant, pointless music the whole time—records that don't need to exist because every part of them already exists elsewhere. Maybe the same everywhere. I wanted to make the opposite and try to find my own successful combinations and strategies. That part-explains the long gestation I guess. But what would be the point of doing anything else? The album is not meant to sound like now, but it's not meant to sound like the past either."
Holden plays all instruments and provides the vocals on The Inheritors, with two exceptions: a saxophone cameo from Zombie Zombie's Etienne Jaumet on "The Caterpillar’s Intervention" and a vocal turn by Shimble on "Circle of Fifths." The album will be preceded by a 12-inch single version of "Gone Feral" on April 8th. You can download the track for free over on the Border Community SoundCloud page. |

| Obnoxious press release, if nothing else. Holden is a dance music producer trying limply to make interesting experimental music, which is why nobody in the experimental music scene gives a about him and why he constantly feels the need to take swipes at dance music. |

I'm generally not that much a fan of Holden's more recent stuff, but within that track's messy and distorted synths there's a sense of melancholy that really resonates with me. |

I've seen the interviews over the years and out of all of the people that I respect in the dance music scene, he's probably the last one I'd have any desire to chill with or talk to at a party. |

I would love to hear this "great music" you all listen to that makes Holden's material look ty.. Mark Anthony.. Your reply for Holden on discogs is one I rather enjoy so that statement definitely seems a bit off to me. Either way... James Holden is an artist that isnt understood but is definitely leagues ahead of most of the mainstream artists out there. It takes a certain kind of appreciation and openness to enjoy this style music. I LOVE Old AND New Holden. Been looking forward to this album for a while. I personally look forward to anything he touches or creates simply because it is pure and real. Not at all like anything els. Organic. Original. Everything he says his music is and I greatly appreciate it.
The haters are going to hate but at least he isnt trying to make music to impress a bunch of idiots. After seeing the soundcloud release of this song I knew I had to come on here just to see everyones justification for talking smack. |

| even though my ears were stressed from the track posted, I liked it. it sounds chaotic and brutal while still having a marching rhythm. my hopes aren't high for the album though, but I'm at least going to preview it a couple of times |

| kind of interested to hear what Looney4Clooney would say about this stuff(on the topic of expanding the musical cannon, everything's been done, etc because i think this is what Holden is thinking he's doing). Hope he finds his way into the thread... |
