Fast food workers want $15/hr (pg. 5)

Armed forces get paid less than minimum wage there? :wtf:
Lews
No.

Base pay for new soldiers is $17,892 a year. At 40 hours a week, that comes out to $8.60 an hour, while minimum wage is $7.25. They also get overtime pay, housing allowances, food allowances, oversea extra pay, hazard pay, war zone pay, amazing medical plans, amazing pension plans, and a lot of other benefits.

It's not a deluxe life, for those at the lowest ranks, but it's a lot more than minimum wage, even before you take into account the other compensation they get.

And? Work in the private sector in a job that matters and you'll be paid like it. That's pretty much the bottom line. Any fast food jockey thinking they deserve 15/hr is just a greedy moron. I don't even have any education related to the job I do, but since it's something that actually matters, I'm compensated to reflect that.

How are they a greedy moron? Don't they deserve to be able to live off what they make?

But, yeah, we shouldn't up the minimum wage. Let's keep allowing corporations to make massive profits, while the government subsidizes their lowest-paid workers through welfare. It's a great system, clearly.

Minimum wage in Australia (for over 21s, in any industry) is $16.37 an hour. It kinda blows me away that in a first world country like the US, people can work full-time in these sorts of industries and still not be able to make ends meet.

I know the thought is that these aren't "skilled" positions, but it doesn't make it any less of a job, and it's a job that has to be done, because people want fast food.

It's pretty mind-blowing to a lot of us, too. I'm certainly no commie, but we really need to take better care of our poor. Massive inequality never ends well, for anybody.

Besides that, this country would be much better off if the poor had more spending money. Trying to leech out as much money as possible is nice for the 1%'s bank accounts, but it's not good for the overall economy. If the poor and middle class had more money, they could spend more, increasing demand, which would require more supply, thereby giving them more jobs. Econ101 right there.

You three sound like humongous phalli. I would love to see you guys live off $7.25 an hour, or worse, supply for a family on it. "They're flipping burgers, what do they expect!? Their children should definitely suffer for it." Jesus.

The typical response would be that they shouldn't have had children to begin with. And I don't 100% disagree with the sentiment either. It's not like it's particularly expensive or difficult to prevent conception these days...

That is WAAAAAAAAYYYYY besides the point. Completely irrelevant.

I get what you mean, but I don't agree with the principle of what you're saying, and contraceptives are a little off-topic. Not all of the people trying to "make ends meet" off this ty wage, are parents. Single people, living in share-houses are having a rough time of it. How is that right?

I know you can say "Oh, if they don't want to work a ty job, then go to university and better yourself" but the price of university education in the US is ridiculous.

I know I'm coming from a foreign perspective (though you're Canadian?) but WOW, it seems so messed up.

Because it is. My anatomy teacher in high school was still paying student loans when I graduated, he was almost 50.

Also many of those who go through university end up getting a minimum wage job when they're out, falling back on their parents to support them financially while they attempt to move up the career ladder and become self-sufficient.

Long story short, minimum wages being low drags down our whole economy, with the only benefit being that corporations make more and more profits, and thus shareholders and those at the top of the corporations make tons of money. While this is great for those few, it hurts the overall base, and, therefore, weakens the whole country.

I think you made a little jump there in your brilliant deduction that I think upping the minimum wage and doubling it are the same thing, and are both equally reasonable.
