The judicial system itself is rotten. The outcomes of each of the cases is predicted by the race of the victims--everybody knows that. Progress is not all natural and authentic. Today the media plays a big role in shaping the general mindset and is flat out lying as it writes the history the masses are happy believing.
Another point which might have been brought up already is the officers and their lack of preparation. Like it or not, most are thrown into practice with little preparation and/or education. Physical preparation and a few seminars is not enough, especially when they are to deal with different possible outcomes and personalities. Also, let's face it, many officers out there are racist and profile on a daily basis.
America is great with humor though, as unintentionally as it happens. The officer doing the choke hold doesn't have to go to court but the guy recording is indicted. It's comedy. |

The thing I find amusing by most of those who are upper middle-class or "well-off" is that they speak, often with compassion, of the downtrodden and "have nots" (in terms of employment/$$ wage) while not realizing that their own standard of living would NOT be what it is were those things to be eliminated. The worst of the bunch are the ones who are extreme tree-hugging animal lovers yet ignore the homeless they walk by on the street.
Not everyone is meant to be a business owner or has the brains/skills for certain careers - even WITH school. Most can but some are just dumb - accept that. We're all brainwashed into the 'do what you love' mantra but depending on your field that may not be enough to pay your bills reliably...

Well I grew up poor, have nothing more than high school (didn't want to do the cliched thing of going to get a degree as I had no idea what I wanted to do) but now I'm what most would consider well off.
I own a business that employs several people and I personally believe the minimum wage should be higher (no one in my company has ever been paid minimum wage).
One guy I recently hired, I poached form Starbucks. I advertised for a front of house/admin/reception job and frankly got a bunch of entitled crazies who all had lofty education but were utterly crap on a professional level, to the point the interview was basically over within the 1st minute.
Then I walk in to my local starbucks, and think how the do they get these happy, hardworking people who will work all gods hours for a pittance, yet have this brand loyalty that you just can't believe.
So I walk in there and hire the girl who was the hardest working, happiest and organized in there, offer her 40% pay rise over her minimum wage and even though she only has a GED, she's on of the best employees I've ever had and even though she knew absolutely nothing about our industry I saw potential and was right. She's been working minimum wage jobs for over 10 years and just needed someone to give her a break.
Why? Because the system of employment here and in other developed countries uses a degree as the price of entry.
It's a club that means you have to be in 6 figure debt just to get consideration for a job that pays higher than minimum wage.

Speaking of OWS... one thing I find completely baffling is how these massive (mainly American) corporations have all kinds of legal means at their disposal to avoid paying corporate taxes. Amazon, Facebook and Google come to mind. The UK is trying to fix this in their country but by the time they do they will have already got away with billions. I give props to accountants/tax lawyers who can navigate through all these loopholes... the $ must be good but the dreariness of it all must be maddening.

This drives me nuts. As a business owner, I get taxed to and even with astute accounting I still pay a big chunk of revenue to local, state and federal taxes. I actually have no problem doing this and think it's only fair so there are some social structures, but it's not ing OK that G.E. Files a ZERO tax return each year and gets so many government subsidies that they actually end up getting paid to be in business, as a multi-billion dollar and extremely profitable corporation.
Amazon actually got handed a huge blow which I'm very happy about which was the main street fairness act, meaning they now have to collect sales tax like every other retail business in the USA.
It's the same with the uber rich. Mitt Romney paying 14% net tax on $50m annual income. WTF, when I and the people I employ have to pay 30+%.
Clever accounting is one thing, and every company does it, but dodging what's due - not OK and the tax system is clearly broken here in the USA.

As for the topic at hand, a choke hold was clearly used and you're blind if you don't see it. They didn't need to tackle this guy to bring him in. We're on the inevitable path of having all law enforcement wear cameras... which sounds simple but hardware/tech wise will require a lot of resources and policy planning that needs figuring out... off the top of my head:
-Retention policies
-Are they always on?
-Is it the officer's responsibility to ensure the camera is 'working' at the start of each shift? If so, how do they verify this?
-etc. |
Actually I know a little about this due to police officers that I know.
Some have already started wearing cameras for their own security. While on duty (not police, union or internal meetings etc) i.e. driving or walking around, their cameras are on for the duration of their shift.
There's a pilot program here in california and Ventura country will shortly have every on duty officer with a camera.
Yes, there are going to be issues if they don't work, don't record properly etc, but if you can make a GoPro virtually indestructible, then the police issue one is going to be pretty robust. |
