I also don't really get the "you people." Who exactly do you think you're talking to? You're exactly what's wrong with this country. Some people NEED that help. They don't exploit it, they NEED it to survive. Raising the minimum wage would allow them to get by without government programs, which seems to be what you want. So what exactly is it you're trying to say. You do realize you're contradicting yourself right? You want people to work for themselves, but you don't want conpanies to have to pay livable wages.

Okay, what do you mean by 'make a difference?' Personally, I'm quite happy there are people to make food, coffee, etc., for me. It allows me to focus my limited time on things that matter more to me than breakfast or lunch.

ooooh touched a nerve...lol
by you people, i mean people that fit the criteria that I described (minus the people with physical disabilities that DO NEED that assistance)
a cashier at McDonald/walmart/starbucks with that's been there for 10 years in the same position with no education, no goals and no potential fits the criteria. he/she should not get $15 or any gov. assistance.
you do realize if they increase pay, they will increase prices on the merchandise and will have smaller profit margins as well as loss of customers due to price increase. why should they suffer loss of profit just because John Doe doesn't want to learn anything new, but still expects $15/hr

it's pointless to discuss anything with these people.

they feel they deserve $15 and hour for dropping a basket of fries in the deep fryer because "they" call it a career.. be realistic..

Yes, but society only has a limited need of EMS/fire fighter/policy officer.

Are you sure programmers and analysts make that much of a 'difference?' Most the programmers and analysts that I know simply make ads easier and more appealing to click on. Doesn't seem to be that much of an improvement for society on making my coffee.

I am positive.
can't really compare a skill set of an analyst vs. a fast food worker. lol come on now.
the way i look at it, is these people are ok in those positions and don't want to be/make more of themselves. that's their preference.

Inflation pushes the CPI up, yet minimum wage stays the same. Some people are not able to advance themselves. All they CAN do is work at McDonalds or WalMart. Educate themselves? That requires money. Or loans that they won't even be able to pay back. Making money takes money. It's not like these people making $8 an hour can afford to go to college, or get a loan to start a business. They are stuck because they can barely even afford to survive, let alone invest in their futures. Raising wages would allow them to do this. If someone made $15 an hour and was getting by, and could invest in a trade school to get a job where they made $20 an hour, do you think they wouldn't do that? Granted, some people will always take the easy road, but for a lot of people, they work those minimum wage jobs because they have no other options. Throwing money at welfare and public assistance does nothing to help people better themselves. It's pretty sick that you type cast every person on minimum wage as good for nothing freeloaders just living off the system who are perfectly content doing so.

I'm not talking about skill set; I'm talking about outcomes. Is making banner ads more appealing more beneficial for society than making coffee?

How many of those people have you talked to, that you're so sure they're all so content to do nothing with their lives, making small change for a living?
