If win 10 is the last version of windows, ever, how does MS plan to make money in the future? |
Microtransactions, of course. They're actually selling a "premium" version of Solitaire through their shop. |

They need people on board with basic desktop/laptop operation (ie. a good slab of the massive business market) to help push their mobile and tablet offerings to compete with Apple and Android.

That actually went pretty damn smooth. Took less that 30mins from a USB 2 thumbdrive on an 2012 asus with e Samsung 830 SSD as the main drive.
The installation itself is very simple - all the usual stuff; delete/format the partitions as necessary and just follow the prompts. It did ask me for a key but it lets you skip that and then a few pages later it asked again (looked like I was in a loop for a second) but then it progressed.
One thing I would warn about is do the Custom Install, not recommended. I always do this and I'm glad I did with W10 - there's a bunch of "report to microsoft" options that are all enabled by default and all they do is track you browsing, location, errors for M$ to use to sell to you. I switched all of them off and the install was probably one of the quickest and most straightforward of all the previous platforms.
Windows 10 feels really snappy. Now I don't have really anything installed on it (apart from chrome) but even M$'s new Edge browser actually works quite nicely.
There's some really sensible things included right on the homescreen, like a little tab for screen brightness which toggles between 25%, 50%, 75% & 100%. Seems obvious but it's actually a great function.
Same with battery saving and wifi - simple straigght forward icons, no silly submenus etc.
The start menu is there but it's like they took the app screen on 8.1 and put it in to a more sensible start menu.
Cortana seems good but again, I've only scraped the surface as of right now
Looking good so far......I hate to say it but this is really what 8.1 *should* have been. |

Wow, you're not kidding. Everything is on by default. Including automatically connecting to any open WiFi nearby. That could be a real security hazard. |

Yeah, but A) In 20+ years of using/building PC's I've never once done a "standard" or "recommended" install of any version of windows and A.1) you'd have to be a muppet to do so, and B) even if you do, so many security things (like windows defender, smartscreen, malicious software removal tool etc) are enabled or installed that having wifi switched on is not really an issue.
It also asks you to connect to a wifi access point as part of the install so it's not like it's randomly connecting to the guy parked outside starbucks phishing for login details.
I also love the pin login function instead of a password.
It's early days but I'm feeling like M$ have nailed this one finally. |

| Oh I like it too. The install was fast, easy and didn't anything up. I'm just worried for those who click "yeah whatever" on everything. |

Yeah, it's ing crazy though all the things that would report back to microsoft if you don't do the custom install. Browsing history, tracking your purchases, even tracking your location :wtf:
It's nice though right? |

| i updated to 8.1 from 8 and wish i hadn't. Audio has been ed ever since i think it could be that RME drivers aren't working 100 percent with 8.1. Thing is i cant roll back to 8.0 so ill have to reinstall!!!!! |

As is with any mobike device these days. Mac, ios, android, windows... Just the open wifi thing is a particularly annoying feat for windows. Oh well... |

| 10 works great here, only EUCON doesn't play nice, but that ball is in AVID's court |
