Damn, long time moonman! How you doing?
Nope, what i'm trying to do is boot from a USB drive in to w7 or w8 so I can upgrade the key to a W10, then just boot to the SSD which has W10 already installed (but not activated as it was a fresh install, not a update where the old key gets converted).
I can;t seems to boot to a portable USB drive with an older version of windows though. |

| Anyone having trouble with Windows 10 and Serato? Virtual DJ seems to be working 100%. Serato is glitchy as hell. BPM's are consistently being screwed up, having a hard time recognizing my controller and a couple other little annoying little bumps. |

Have you tried running it in compatibility mode for W8.1?
Go to the .exe file for serato, right click, then propertie, now go to the compatibility tab and select W8.
Let us know how you get on? |

My personal experience with win 10 so far...
I did a clean install, all good till I tried to access my "raid" partition (made with the Disk manager), but there was no partition to be shown in My Computer xD. After some head scratching found out that apparently, win 10 doesn't like raid setups with HDDs larger then 1 TB set as anything but GPT disk.
I switched back to win 7 to unpair the HDDs, backed up my data, converted the disks to GPT and paired them back. After that pile of donkey f!@k, I installed the win 10 back and everything worked as it should be. All drivers worked like a charm, surprisingly, remembering the bad experience I had with vista. Cracked software works w/o any issues too :toothless.
Aaaand as a celebration of the windows 10 installment my mackie big knob died :haha:
Overall the new windows looks to be a better experience and coming from win 7 it feels like a step forward. |

This is the biggest plus for W10. Everything works right away without any need to tinker. |

Update on my saga:
What a ing nightmare.
So my old asus laptop that i had done a fresh install of W10(as a first test before installing it on my new Lenove) developed a fatal boot sector issue to the point even a repair would not work.
So this time, as it was un activated, i deceide to do it legit, and convert the old W7 Home license I have for it to a legit full W10 install.
Firstly, the only way they let you upgrade is to use the original OEM disks from your manufacturer as it was preinstalled by ASUS. These are virtually impossible to get now as ASUS don't keep stock of the older windows installations.
.
Anyway, after a ton of research, I found out that the Dell OEM W7 disksare virtually identical to the ASUS and some kind chap had uploaded them to TPB.
Gave it a shot and thankfully it worked. Now I had to update. It needed 8 rounds of updates to get W7 to the point it was fully updated and then I'd be allowed to do the W10 update.
Took about 4 hours in total to update (on a 300mbit connection) and then thanks to the nice people at reddit, they have a nifty little script that forces an immediate upgrade,
So then, did the upgrade which was done in under 20mins, but it's done it automatically to 32bit windows. That's fine though as I'm going to wipe it and do a fresh install to w10.
So I activate it all fine, then create the USB media (an really straightforward and excellent feature of W10) on a USB 3 drive.
Took a screen shot of the activation page just in case, then started the wipe and fresh install with my USB drive.
.
So older laptops (anything 2012 or earlier do not have native USB support.
So now I have to do this long winded command line thing where it copies the contents of the USB drive to my internal SSD, and then change the bios to boot from the SSD instad of the USB.
Install finally gets going, I go to activate and: Invalid Product key.
WHAT THE .
It just won't validate my properly upgraded key.
I'm ed.
So I find Microsoft activation chat support (which is like trying to find a virgin in a brothel) but jump through their maze of pages, and very quickly get chatting to a guy in india.
It takes a good 15 mins to explain the situation, and he then tells me that it turns out, when i was making the USB media, I chose Windows 10 Pro N, and the N version is only for certain territories, NOT including the USA.
Thankfully this guy is really on it and within 5 mins, had spoken to a supervisor and got my key upgraded to the Pro N version.
He takes remote control of my laptop and within 1 minute I'm all upgraded.
All in all, it took two days to do this but at least M$ support is pretty ing sharp, even if the legit upgrade process is convoluted.
I now have to do this to me Lenovo laptop. I tried using a portable USB stick version of 8.1 but the speed is so slow I can't even work with it.
Looks like I'm going to have to get a cheap HDD with 8.1 on it then swap out to authenticate my w10. |

gonna grab a pirate version of w10 if i decide it try it again, all this !
it's free anyway...
though i am still running serato scratch live, the predecessor to serato dj, and that seem to be a bit wobbly... do the tracks stream alright? as long as it does that, don't care about bpm's etc. |

Lol, why grab a pirate version when it's available for free? All you need is any valid licence of w7 or w8.1. At some point you had a legit license for one of them?
As for serato, until they release a patch, W10 is not compatible, although you could try running it in compatibility mode?

It really is. Just playing with 8.1 to get the upgrade reminded me of how utterly e it was. They also fixed the automatic driver thing in W10 as it actually works now unlike in 8.1
Oh and I know it was mentioned at the beginning of this thread but the issue of M$ tracking your moves is just as invasive in a auto install of 8.1. Actually if anything, they made it more obvious in W10 as to what to disable. |

All major companies are doing tracking now. It's inescapable. |

Tracking what?
What are they looking for? |

Basically that is any data you can practically and legally get your hands on. Analyzing that data should provide insights and new ways to monetize your users.
When used/implemented well it serves as a feedback loop which allows you to continuously improve your product(s), in this case mostly without even having direcr customer contact. |
