I hope they make that work.

Platforms like Steam and iRacing can work seamlessly, and although I know a whole operating system is a different kettle of fish it would be good to see that blaggers suffer a bit.

I guess we can kick back and wait for all the "Help - I installed W10 and now my Sylenth/FLS/Massive don't work!" threads.

I wonder how much this anti-piracy thing will deter people from upgrading to W10.

MS have been doing this for awhile now and this EULA was updated to add windows 10 in. The EULA runs across all devices that runs windows 10, which xbox is going to be running. MS disabling mod chip Xbox and firmware hacked x boxes is nothing new.

Ah, I wasn't aware of that (not an XBox user). Is that what they mean by "unauthorized hardware"?

It might deter them, but eventually they will have to upgrade.

But like you say, it has to be invisible to legitimate users that don't live in their Mums basement feeling all entitled to their 'hobby'.

There are obviously big concerns with M$'s new model for W10;

It really doesn't surprise me that they are going to find ways to ban certain hardware such as illegal mods. Apple did the same with Apple TV and to do date, no one has been able to jailbreak Apple TV3.

The software thing is a little more sticky though - the potential fallout that could come from someone's legit software erroneously beingbarred or removed simply would not be worth it. It's a class action lawsuit just waiting to happen.

Even then, I really wouldn't worry about either - it took redddit users all of 48 hours how to figure out an easy and surefire way to force download the update to W10, something which M$ worked hard to avoid.

You think it will stop avid gamers from hacking their way to mods? No chance. Same with software. Wherever they build a lock, someone will build a key.

I'm going to update this thread shortly with a workaround I've figured out for anyone that does a fresh install on their without having gone through the tedious upgrade procedure to convert their key from a W7 or W8.1 license first. Just need to make sure it's bullet proof....

The only legit way to clean install and upgrade for free is to upgrade from 7/8. Than clean install after you activate windows 10, Than you clean install\format all you want. Win10 activation is tied to MSA and hardware hash.

The forced updates and terrible privacy settings are deterrent enough.

Windows 10 LTS solves that, but that's enterprise stuff. When implemented well forced updates are very very valuable for providing a solid, secure, consistent and up-to-date user experience. Every browser and mobile phone does this already, why not the pc?

Privacy settings I can understand :)

My Windows 8 machine keeps exhorting me to upgrade to 10. Maybe I will take it up on the offer one of these days.

I know - I already posted that earlier in this thread. The problem is for anyone that has a main drive failure (as I did) on their W7 or 8.1 drive and needs to upgrade.

My laptop HDD had died but I had a new SSD waiting for W10 but I wasn't going to install 8.1 then upgrade to W10 wheh we didn;t even know if W10 was any good. I also only ever do fresh installs on new drives, never upgrades from an older OS.

My workaround is to a use a portable W8.1 installation on a USB flashdrive then update it to w10 to convert the key.

The reason this works is that the hardware hash checks 10 major components and it allows for a difference of 3 out of these 10 so as long as any 7 remain the same, the key is still good.

Put on your tinfoil hats.

Windows 10 is malware.

Google already owns my soul, may as well enjoy the 10 years I got from that deal ;)

Seriously though one of my favorite new things with Windows 10 is the quick access system... all the folders I frequent the most are easily accessible. I spent quite alot of time manually navigating from certain bookmarks previously, its a huge time saver for me.
