I'm starting to get really ed off with trying to make my fresh W10 install legit.
W10 is not allowing me to create or boot to a portable USB drive loaded with 8.1.
I've tried wintousb with no joy, and it seems windows to go is only supported in 8.1.
At this point, it's starting to look like I'll have to install 8.1 fresh, then update it to W10 again :whip: |

| Got delivered my new laptop a few hours ago. Just installed w10 and migrating a lot of stuff now. Couldn't be happier atm. I came form W7 and all of a sudden all these kinds of features that I envied mac for are available in Windows now too. |

My saga continues. I still have not figured out a way to make a windowns 8.1 portable version that I can upgrade to to 10 then use the key for my ssd.
I may have to concede defeat and wipe it back to 8.1., then do the full upgrade to 10, then wipe it again and do a fresh 10 install. Grrrrrr :whip: |

Windows 10 can seek out pirated software
Of course, if it screws up, it could also be a nightmare for those of us who do... |
I'm ok with that all I use is Reason and Reaper with the JS plug-ins in Reaper. |

So, a funny thing...
My laptop's motherboard got fried, so it had to be replaced - I just got it back from the shop today. However, since the motherboard is new, Microsoft thinks my computer is also different, which means the product key I have is no longer valid.
Apparently now my only options are to roll back to Win 8.1 and reinstall or purchase a new product key.
Fun times. |

Well this is what I was getting at earlier;
M$ uses hardware hash to make sure you're not using the same version of windows on multiple machines.
It checks 10 components (cpu, gpu, hdd, motherboard etc) and you're allowed 3 of these to change, but anymore and it will think you're using a different computer.
Your laptop probably had so many components integrated in to the motherbaord that it probably meant 5 or 6 hashes flagged when ti was swapped out.
However, you should be able to "trade" your old W10 serial for a new one. You will need access to the windows files (especially windows.old folder) but they should be able to swap it to a new W10 license. Otherwise (and this is going to sound bonkers) you may have to do a fresh install of 8.1 using your old legit license, then upgrade all over again to w10.
Personally, if you do that, get a second cheap drive (anything as long as it works), install 8.1. on it upgrade to W10, then swap you old drive back in and change the product key back.
It will only see one hardware hash having changed with the HDD being replaced.Easiest way to do it. |

| Well, I already reverted it back to 8.1 - seeing I just got it back from the shop I figured I might as well do it right away. Luckily all my important files are on an external HDD... |

Nice remark. This is probably one of the main reasons why Microsoft is pushing so hard for the switch to windows 10. Overall my experience thus far is great, but this worries me as I usually do multiple upgrades on my pc once every few yrs. |

Luckily it was a quick process and I'm back on 10 now, but it is a pretty big nuisance - especially since this hardware update didn't even happen by choice. |
