American food is a step up from ours in the junk factor.

This is the bit I'm responding to, as in I don't agree with this above sentence.
Sorry, maybe I'm missing some kind of context here :conf: |

All of my and Jay's posts? If it helps, I'm using "factor" in the mathematical sense. |

me Jay. I said we have an obesity crisis of our own. It's not too hard to ing grasp, is it?
How much time have you spent in the UK? |

I've been for 2 days. I am drunk.
There are a ton of brits here...and only one of them i would stick my lonely married penis into.
We will talk tomorrow when I'm not gaining liver weight.
Money is th problem...you have it, you don't make friends with salad. |

I won't dispute that. They don't call obesity a "disease of affluence" for nothing. But some developed Western nations are fatter than others, and I think most of that comes down to the culinary culture. If you go to a country like Spain you can eat amazing food that's cheap and healthy from even the most unassuming cafe. In the UK that same cafe would be selling bacon butties and in the US it would be selling some molten cheese monstrosity that would kill the guy from Man Versus Food after one bite. |

Ah, ok, it was the use of a positive that was getting me confused.
It's not quite true that obesity is a disease of affluence anymore. Go to the ghetto here or a to trailer park and everyone is fat. Go to ty town in glasgow and they're all tubby.
Beyond a basic security level (such as everyone has in the UK due to the NHS and Benefits etc) money is not the deciding factor in relation to Obesity.
it's not the 1700's where being fat = you had resources to be a glutton.
Real poverty sees a lot less obesity. |

There are plenty of fat people in the UK as well. |
Heard that as well. Had an acquaintance who went to London for job purposes some time ago. She said that especially the women are extremely hefty and rude.
Swedish people, which were known for their slim and tall figure have started going down this path as well. It's not uncommon to see fat, tattooed, smoking women with a child at every corner now a days. The country has an extremely well-developed sector or sweets which are sold exclusively within the country and are somewhat part of the culture. I think they are starting to lack greatly on the physical part.
@JBJ / RANN thanks for the posts! |

To push back slightly on this... We need to think about just how ing gigantic the United States is, on a geographic scale, and on a population scale. Yes, there are many areas that are morbidly obese, but let's not use complete blanket statements. Hardly anyone where I'm from, Seattle, is obese, and I've only had good experiences when traveling - except for the Texan airport...
330 million citizens, 65% are overweight, that leaves 100,000,000 people at a normal weight level. Certain areas are horrible, but the coasts and large cities tend to be much better.
And there 100% are healthy instant/to-go meals in America, it just depends where you look. Not to even start on the cafe issue.
I'd guess I see more overweight people on a daily basis in London than I did in Seattle (on a percentage basis). |

But you live in seattle, possible the single most liberal, educated, blue voting, outdoorsey, progressive place in north America.
Kind of like saying, I live in beverly Hills and I really don't see much poverty.

Just say that out loud. It doesn't matter what the figure is that aren't, it's the fact that two thirds of this country are overweight. That means you meet three people, and one of them is normal weight.

Sure whole foods. Ralphs fresh fare. PavillionsNow lets get back to talking about the two thirds who will only ever shop in Walmart, K mart and Costco, where everything is processed .
If I hang around Hollywood or Santa Monica or WeHo, I'm sure I'll not see that many morbidly obese people, but go to inglewood, go to glendale, go to oakland, and guess what, the number spikes in the opposite direction.
The fact is Amerca is sadly too fat, and it's because we're sold junk food even when we go to the supermarket. |
