No, just pointing out that we already routinely treat and make allowances for people who arguably "got themselves into" their disability.

I dunno, some people genuinely can't walk because they're so fat. The fact that other kinds of disability might be self-inflicted doesn't prevent people from getting benefits for them: an addict whose drug injection ultimately led to gangrene and amputation, a guy who broke his back doing some stupid stunt to impress his friends, or whatever. Seems kind of shaky to base eligibility on moral judgments rather than on objective inability to function normally.
I get where you're coming from but it's not an "accident" that you get morbidly obese. You didn't fall off a ladder while trying to make a cool skateboard feet and wham, you're 400lbs.
It take a many years of self neglect to become obese. You know you're getting fat. If you see a doctor at any point they'll tell you're overweight and it will cause you health issues. You know that you're getting fat. It's a long standing, and repetitive choice.
So why do we facilitate it? Why do give morbidly obese people special allowances for the continued damage to their health?
It's a not a moral judgement as such. We don't allow people who are a danger to themselves to continue to do it, they get sectioned.
In the UK, the NHS in certain areas and circumstances have stopped offering routine operations (not life saving) for those who continue to be overweight or smoke and do nothing about it. Is that wrong? I'm inclined to say no. You want to kill yourself slowly and horribly when you know it's doing exactly that, then why should you get special treatment while you do it?
It's a luxury of developed /wealthy countries, masquerading as "freedom".

Probably because unhealthy people mean more money for doctors, pharmaceuticals and insurance... In general healthcare is more a business than charity. Would be nice to see this change but I doubt it since a lot of people would go "broke".

Portland and Seatlle are probably the two most tree hugging, progressive, whole foods bothering, health focussed cities in America.
Trying to specifically use those two places as some kind of anecdote for a healthy and normal weight america is just silly.
I could do the same; I live about 10 mins from West hollywood, arguably one of the fittest cities in the US (probably because of the incredibly dense gay population who all the hit the gym5/6 times a week).
The stats however sadly don't lie when you look at America as a whole. 65% ot better said TWO THIRDS is clinically overweight.
20 states have obesity rates over 30%. And that's not "a bit overweight" - it means Obese.
40% of adults in the USA ages 40-59 are obese.
The 10 states with the highest obesity are all in the south.
You can say all you want about certain states, cities or enclaves being healthy and fit and their shops selling really good produce etc, but that is not represeantive of the USA as a whole.
Thankfully, there were only 6 states where the obesity rate actually increased but that also doesn't mean it decreased in the others.
It boggles my mind that obesity qualifies you for a disability (i.e. parking permit, special conditions when flying, etc) and that stores actually have those ing carts to help obese people get to their food easier. I mean, , you'd have thought the one time you could get them to exercise might be with the promise of food.
Can you read what I've ing written or are you too ing retarded to understand simple ing English?
America is too big to think you can explain the whole thing from certain areas. It is too ing diverse. Yes, a lot of it is fat and stupid, but the parts that aren't are bigger than every civilised European state - so have fun explaining that.
Don't refer to the whole thing as one in these threads, unless you want to look like a ing idiot.

Rann, I generally agree with you on just about 99% of the stuff you post. And yes, Seattle and Portland are outliers with regards to health consciousness... hell Portland is so anti-chemical it's got a service called "Lice knowing you" where rather than using chemicals to remove lice, there are actual nit pickers that comb through your hair. I digress.
At any rate, been working here at a clinic in Portland over the summer. I see a number of bariatric surgery candidates. So, these people are morbidly obese but wanting to have bariatric surgery. In order for them to have the surgery, they have to hit a certain weight bench mark, and be able to maintain that weight for 6 months.
If they can demonstrate the psychological discipline to keep their diets in check, then the surgery is performed.
When ever I see these patients, my clinical instructor always reminds me that these people usually have had some serious trauma in childhood.... abuse, etc. She says that obesity is one of the last acceptable prejudices. I know I'm probably going to get killed on here for saying that, but it does hold some water at least with the patients I've had to see, and understanding their past.

Everybody has problems one way or another during their lifetime. Simply blaming the one or the other doesn't cut it. That's one of the vices of modern society that is growing more and more popular almost everywhere: It's never somebody's fault
Another thing I've noticed with fat people, they always have that inner bitterness and contempt for others. Everyone who is skinny or takes care of their bodies are douchebags, bitches or any other insult. Not to mention that - from what I've seen in my vicinity - men always blame their lack of relationship on some upper-intellectual trait and that they just can't seem to find the right woman. They always try to compensate extremely much on other sides.
This is my personal experience,k donīt know if the US is the same or over there obesity is more socially acceptable.
