Well, that was kinda my point in this thread that some people you just hang around with becuase you've known them for a long time, not necessarily that you have much in common or much to relate to or particularly get on. It's habit and comfort.
I think you get to a point when if you're able to see past the history, you just ask, would I be friends with this person if I met them now? If the answer isn't yes, then why are you still in contact.
