a BA is the "new" high school diploma?

now, before i didn't think a master's was all that important to have. currently, i know i am going to go for my master's degree in business/marketing/advertising in a year.

my bf said it like this: "a ba will get you an interview but a master's will help you get an interview and the job"

i was talking to someone at an alumni weekend a month ago and he was saying how he was planning on going back to school. he said that a ba has lost it's value or something like that...

i think it depends on what your field is. my major is communication and my minor is psychology. i have studied japanese (still studying it even though i just graduated)

i plan to take a year off, keep studying japanese, get a decent job and then go to get my masters in business. then i would be able to get a job i really want...

would you guys agree about a BA's current value?

there is no cor version, because if you really need a cor version then you may not know how to deal with this inquiry, lmao. i'm half joking... :)

Everything has lost it's value. An A.A. used to be worth something. Now you say you have an A.A. and everyone says "Yeah, so?". Which is ridiculous because for some people, even getting an A.A. is difficult [with full time jobs &/or children to take care of]. My bf graduated with his B.S. last year & now his company is paying for him to get his M.S.

I somehow got lucky. All I have is a high school diploma, and I am a Computer/Network Administrator for a multi-billion dollar company making an appropriate salary for that job. I'm 23 years old and I've been here for over 5 years.

I recognize that I'm definitely the exception, though, and I probably should focus more on my education since I'd likely be screwed if I ever lost this job... but damn, do I hate school. It's hard for me to motivate myself to attend class.
Moral Hazard
It's true, a BA is the minimum for most professions now (in NA anyway). The problem is education has become too accessable, too many people are getting Bacholer degrees, so it no longer makes you special, it no longer sets you apart. We were sold a bill of goods when we were told that "if you go to university you can get any job you want" and we all bought it.... by doing so we diluted our own value.

Whenever I see somebody getting a degree in psychology i automatically think they're lazy.

almost every job, even fast food has reconsidered max/min accredits. i wouldnt have even gotten a job at starbucks with my degree and experience without knowing someone. we get masters in history applicants that are in their 50s!

why im still working there im not so sure, im literally allergic to that job, soy et al.

when looking before that, most places wouldnt talk to me.

but i have to say without debt, parental help and the ability to survive living in boulder co, i may be broke but pretty happy otherwise.

perhaps with hockey and slightly cheaper living conditions it will be even better, my girl is going to law school in denver! woo!

maybe i could even save and get a car! or just save in general.

plus closer to the denver music scene and my friends interested in the same|

Learn a trade and u will always be able to find a job and put food on the table. I learned a trade and put myself through school, and it was basically a waste of my time getting this bachelors degree and a waste of money at that. I'm glad I never had to get a student loan to pay for this degree or I'd be extremely pissed.

thanks for all the replies.

squirrelly --> i hope i can find a job that pays for me to get my masters. i've heard of jobs like that before...

david.michael --> that is awesome for you...i don't think many people come across a situation like that.

Moral Hazard --> it's true and it sucks. it shouldn't be that when more people get a college education, it gets harder to hold that value. especially when tuition and book prices are increasing... well i guess it's pushing me to go higher. hopefully grad school prices aren't too out of control in the next years ...i have a feeling they will be though.

Omega_M--> when i was 12, i wanted to get my ph.d. now, i don't think i can do it! i would LOVE to have a doctorate degree and feel i actually accomplished something. who knows...maybe i might go for it in the far future.

biznology --> when you were talking about your job, did you mean that it was good to have a connection asdide from your degree and experience?

Nursing rules. These are things I never have to worry about, thank god. Plus, most places have continuing education programs, so if I want to get my Masters and teach, or even my Ph.D and become a practitioner...I can! Whenever I want! Yayyy!

i blame inflation for the devaluation of the BA
