I think that definition of Americans is probably the most accurate portrail.;)

Too add to this, I was thinking last night about what "American Culture" is. I came to the conclusion that our culture is simply "consumer culture," which is pretty much saying that we son't really have a culture, which is really pathetic.

Think about what is under every holiday and event, or anything really that americans do as a "cultural" thing. What's the defining principle that moves it?

Money...

Pretty much, you cannot participate in anything really, unless you pay for something. You cannot enjoy the holiday or event unless you buy something. Everything is defined by money and consumerism.

Americans need to compete will be their downfall. Imagine a day when the cooperate pigs who "run" america have the recourses and abilities to replace all of their workers with comperters and machines that will do work more efficiantly and less costly. They will have to fire everybody, becuase even if one cooperation has morals, their compitition won't, and in order fo them to keep their jobs and their company and not end up working at Wal-mart, they will have to do the same. American Capatalism will always have to keep up with the status quo, and the status quo is always set by the most immoral and greedy companies.

It's disgusting and makes me sick that so many people voted for Bush, who supports a smaller role of government in buisness affairs, allowing companies to do what they want. And the tax cuts, making the rich richer.

Most Americans are ignorant because they are not exposed to different points of view or cultures. They are secluded in their jobs and their cities, thinking what Fox News tells them to think. Their ingnrance is based on their ability to not expose themselves to what really matters.

Living in this country has almost made me sick as the years go by. Americans say they have freedom, but I've experinced more freedoms while living in other countries than I ever did in America. Now, we have "Big Brother" watching our every moves. We are moving backwards just so we can have a false sense of security, and we are sacrafing so much for this .

Hey hey I'm drunk, and posting it the PDD. Aww man I'm wasted. Anyway I'd say the yanks.. well there are lots of them. Thats why they are powerful. Otherwise the blatent self intrest they show would consume it'self. Having said that the same thing manifests it'self in every other culture. But in the states it is so naked and obvious.

The media is so biased, the politians so "lobbyied" and yet the same happens in europe. But what I would say is it is less noticable.

I'd say the difference between the two is that in America it is harder to know all about your country (and so hold your representatives acountable) simply because the granulaity is large, that is your country is bigger and people frankly can't be arsed checking up on their representaives 24/7 (yank phrase..).

w00t im drunk too :P

but there's one thing wrong with your reply, bro.

and that's the fact that "yanks" aren't all that powerfull. the fact is that so many immigrans come to this country that alot of so-called powerfull people are either 1st generation americans or maybe just even immigrated here.

One, I been posting in PDD before you even knew about this site, two I was pointing out that people/groups that are payed to survey people or statistics need to have their backgrounds checked out and the sources of money identified.

one, you don't know when i knew about this site. two, i've yet to see any significant posts from you. i guess "fail" should apply, right? cretin, what do YOU know about people who do research or studies on these topis? One of my replies refers to a book author who has more weight in one word of his than anything you'll say your whole life.

(think we are gonna get into a drunk chat that mkes no sence and is yet documented lol)

Right when I say yanks I mean americans (no yankee conotations). I wasn't refering to powerfull people just the fact that the staes is powerful. Also I think it derives this ower 1) by being large (not unlike europe) and 2) (unlike europe) being unified that is europe is not as tight an organisation (for want of a better word) as the US.

This I think will change however. With the threat of china an india the EU (and so on) will need to group togeather tighter (and even with the US) jus to match these new heavy weights. Right bed time.

What a crap.

Fail.

The real Beauty of being American? We're over here in our well-off country, and many a poor slob of a "European" (who likes to think they're all so different, yet many suffer from common class/social structure problems) are over in your going nowhere, precious "historical" Euro countries that no one really gives two craps about anymore.

There's a reason many of your ancestors came here, and are still coming here! Opportunity. Free Market. The chance to be something.

Bash away, you sniveling, jealous little whiney "Europeans"...real Americans could care less...you know why? Because it's 5 o'clock on Friday, we just got a fat paycheck and are jumping in our new sports car and heading out to try and spend all the excess bling!

So, what's goig on in Slough tonight? :haha:

This is the gayest I've ever heard. Whatever your fantasies may be, this is not reality. You are probably one of those Americans who strive for nothing but the gain of money to quench your happiness. It's really pathetic. Sadly, a lot of Americans are ignorant like this.

I want to thank donnybrasco for showing all of us an perfect example of American ignorance. Bravo

IMO that's not very true. There's plenty of American "culture" that is exported abroad. TB shows, music, movies, brand names, shops, etc., as a matter of fact, can you name any other country that exports more culture abroad than america?

Now like me, you may not like this culture that is exported, but there's no reason to enter a state of denial.

Thanksgiving? Labor day? Martin Luther King day? July 4th? I don't know, why don't you describe to us how America is so distinct from hte rest of the world such that everyone elses's holdidays decidedly do not revolved around money or consumerism? I was never aware that Europeans don't buy gifts for each other during Christmas ...

I'm certain you yearn for the days of past whereby every industry manufactured everything by hand. Unfortunately inefficiency and incompetance has never been much a driver towards growth. The US economy has been one of the principal drivers towards the world economy in 2005 with respect to a return on investments and growth ... who should we emulate? Germany??? The US consumer market has sustained much of the world's global economy ... be careful what you wish for.

Unless you're trying to pin all the attributes of "freedom" on a silly singular issue such as the drinking age, don't even try to depict American civil liberties as lacking compared to the rest of the world or Europe. There has been an erosion of American civil liberties but it's still QUITE robust compared to some of the comparisons you would find in Europe.
