If the person asked politely I would probably turn it down, I've a ton of patience and consideration when it is shown to me. I'd have no problem complying with a polite request (please and thank you go a long way).
If the person was less than polite about it (not just 'rude', but even neutral), em. Like Jay's been saying, when you're on PUBLIC transportation you should expect to have to deal with minor annoyances from other people. If I have to listen to you talk to your kids about school, you can put up with nntz nntz nntz from my headphones :P
RE: Polite request:
Obviously I'm under no obligation to turn my down either way. When out in public I have to smell bad-smelling people, see ugly people, listen to annoying conversations, walk behind slow people hogging walking space in the mall, etc. etc. I could go for hours. But I'm not complaining, because I'm one who has grown wise over the years, and come to EXPECT these things and ACCEPT that I have no right to tell people how to live their lives, as long as it isn't harming me (and no, being annoyed is not a form of harm). Of course, these ridiculous nitpickers would argue they have the 'right' to ask/tell you to turn it down. Of course, I then have the 'right' to ignore them, so I figure fair's fair :) |

| Also, MOST headphones you cant hear far away from the person. Like the ones I have, they are loud for me, but you cant really hear them far away, i've tested that. If you're wearing super huge DJ ones or something, then obviously it will be louder than the typical headphones, so turn them down abit, and dont wear them around your neck with them on. Luckily on the buses I take to work, theres not many people on it, so we are spread out, but if I was right beside someone, I have and would turn it down. |

| This thread exemplifies the attitude that permeates toronto....people's automatic reactions are "why should I" or " you" or "well you're doing x, y and z" |

seriously...whatever happened to being humble? people always want to revert the focus onto why they're the ones being persecuted.
suck it up, then get off the train and crank your up again on the way to the store to spend $30 on the same kickass in-ear sonys as mine that don't leak a db. |

No i think this article exemplifies toronto in the sense that people here always think they are entitled to whine until they get their own way. So that results in whining about even the smallest dumbest things.
So yes, Why should i?
Talk to me when you have a real problem and ill help you. |

Because people don't like to feel that they are in the wrong, or just have an lazy attitude to do something. (Or a combo of both)
One of the problems with this concept of 'right' is that people tend to think my 'right' trumps your 'right' and you while you're at it.
I still say a throat punch should be in the order. |

Why shouldn't you, though?
this attitude of me, myself and I makes me want to leave toronto. it's ridiculous how people exist in their own bubble, and everyone else. |

I don't own a walkman/ipod or any other personal listening device. I take very good care of my hearing.
The basic rule is if you have your hands cupped over the earpiece you shouldn't be able hear it.
Respect others. Respect your hearing! |

in a city of 5 million people only idiots will go around stressing themselves over little things that they have no control over.
learn 2 adapt to your surroundings and just go with it or go live in a small town where everyone is on a first name basis. |
