lol Not gonna quote everyone in this thread but to sum up.
France's win vs Spain, was not deserved?? lol I guess I must have watched an entirely different game where Vieira and Makelele didn't own the whole spanish midfield.
France's win vs Brazil was not deserved?... I'll just say "..." to that.
France vs Portugal was indeed an ugly win, but a win in the end.
This is my opinion and my opinion only, both Italy and France got there because they were the best teams, simple as that. It doesn't matter if you play "pretty" football, if you create a lot of scoring chances, all that stuff equals nothing if you don't score and win in the end. A win is a win NO matter what, the sooner people realize that the better.
I'm sick and tired of people saying how cattenaccio or whatever the it's spelt is ugly football and blah blah blah, but guess what, it brought 3 WC's to Italy so they must have done something right. Same goes to France's ugly wins... who cares if their wins are lucky or not, whole point is that they're winning.
Believe me, go ask a football player, pick anyone, what do they prefer, to win playing ugly nasty football or to lose playing magnificent football?? It's time to be honest here, this is today's football, it might suck for some of you and it might not be that interesting to watch, but that's all there is to it, the final result will always come first, a win is a win. |

Italy don't deserve to be in the tournament, but they did play a great game against Germany which redeemed them a tiny bit in my eyes
I really Hope France win this, and i hope it's a clean game without a bull ref and theatrics on both sides |

i don't think a world cup goes by without people bitching about the final...
yes Brazil and Argentina had some good results that looked like pretty football... and sure a 3-2 final between those two South American powerhouses would've been amazing.
Just like if Togo played... ohh hell Saudi Arabia in the final it would've been ing sweet (thought i'm sure ppl still would've bitched).
But look Italy has been underachieving for a while, and France was looking like '98 was a fluke - here's a chance for both teams to redeem themselves and play some ing football.
Will the game be good??? Hell No! It will probably end something like 1-0 or 0-0 all the way to penalties, but what TRUE soccer fan didn't enjoy 1 game at this tournament???? I watched them all, and I don't care about the diving, the ed up calls, nasty fouls, lucky goals and any of that - it makes the game better. If teams played it clean football would be boring - something like that Simpsons interpretation of it floating around. The little tugs and pulls, and pretty much everything teams do to gain advantage is what makes the game fun to watch.
Go watch Sheva's first goal in the tournament - worst blown call I've seen - totally pushed off his defender - but no one complained cuz no one cares about Ukraine. However if they had the type of coverage that Italy and France gets people all over these boards would've been killing each other over it. People love to hate the big teams, and people love to cheer for them... But the point is it's just 22 guys on the field, and some off the bench, playing the beautiful game for their country and all the Extra bull off the field doesn't matter... who cares what you thought about the game - you still watched it, if you really hate the final teams, or hate one of them you would not watch it, put your actions where your mouth is! But the truth of the matter - everyone will watch it, because no one really hates anyone, we just like to bitch and complain cuz without it football wouldn't be what it is....
yes this is a bit unorganized but i'm just flowing with my thoughts. |

Excessive controversy is part of the problem, but what really made this world cup was dull, defensive matches. Many top players tired of a long season. Unspectacular teams being the most effective. I enjoyed it but not as much as 1994 and 1998 (2002 was just as terrible as this year). I want to watch it but just because it's the world cup. |

I've also noticed the games were not that good quality. The England games were ing brutal and some of the more exciting teams (Ivory Coast) didn't even get into the 2nd Round. Plus the officiating has just been horrendous. They have to start doing something about the inconsistency in called fouls and make up their mind on the hand ball rule. I saw so many unintentional ball to hand contact called and given yellow cards but then deliberate handballs just ignored. The referees are either blind or they are too slow to keep up with play (and I believe that ex players should be refereeing, not these so called "professionals" who have jobs on the side). ANd the diving...well lets just say that they seriously need to consider vieweing video evidence and then awarding cards and suspensions to those who act and deceive. Also, players who go off on stretchers delay the game immensely. If they are really injured, that is fine, but I am sick of seeing these wankers get carried off, hop back to their feet and run back on the pitch 20 seconds later. If you go off hurt on a stretcher, you shouldn't be able to come back on for at least 5 minutes, if not more. That would stop this insane time wasting crap with injuries. It's really quite easy to make the game more honest, but FIFA need to have some balls and embrace using replays after the fact. Maybe an additional substitute in Extra time as well and perhaps if you sub off your injured goalie, it should not count as one of your three subs. That really ed the Argies.
What is the goal total of this WC compared to the last few? I be it's down. |

You're right, sir.
2006 = 2.27 goals/match
2002 = 2.52 goals/match |

got the goal averages for all the WC's? I'm curious to see if it's always been a downward trend. I guess I could do it all myself...but wow i'm just too lazy. |
