I was pointing out that excessive negativity wasn't psychologically good for any of us, and that we should try to deflect some of it by making an effort to be positive in our own lives.

Stay on the sunny side of life. Gotcha.

Anyway, I digress. All I was trying to say was that we should try to make the effort to be more pleasant, and try to deflect the negativity that is consumming us as a culture. Didn't think it would spark such a large group of opposers.

Very few have "opposed" you - you are not being attacked - in fact, several people critical of your opinion have said that they agree with you. However, people are being critical of your opinion because it seems to lack an uncharacteristic degree of understanding on your part. I know what you are saying - we cannot control others, we can only control ourselves, so the spread of peace and understanding comes from within and our positivity should resonate within those around us, bringing nations together as we dissipate a multi-thousand-year legacy of violence and aggression inherent to our physiology. This viewpoint has been criticized of its naivete because it begs to ask the question - how can we control others? How can we make them stop? I want peace, myself, but how am I to go about inspiring this in other people? Should I submit to their whims? Should I face their violence with non-violent opposition in hopes of making them see how change can be exacted without the cost of innocent lives? If they do not see, my life is forfeit and more importantly, my opinion is dead. Maybe the solution is to wage war against these people - a final war to rid the world of violence? Yeah, that'd make sense. Most importantly however, how do you disarm the people who have been victims of violence? Their opposition begets more violence, so can they be considered the source of the sickness? How do you disarm and convince someone of the ideal of world peace when their entire family has been killed in a rocket strike?

Saccharine values of inaction may help you sleep at night in the west, but there are people who face war and violence on a day-to-day basis. If I am to understand your opinion correctly, you are suggesting that we, westerners, subscribe to peace and courtesy and respect...in hopes that this will change the minds of people who actually have to fight and kill just to survive each day? That is why it seems naive. this world is on a bullet, and weapons speak much louder than empty negotiations.

Some people posting here are still only young, probably have never lost a loved one, have never been in a terrifying situation and have no concept of deep historical cultural conflict & it's effects on society. They have probably been nurtured in a good home, in good neighbourhood, in a good western society, sheltered up all their lives and it makes them want to give 'happy-vibes' to everyone around the world. Maybe these people should visit a 3rd world country and learn cultural differences first hand. The whole "I read it in a book", or "Am studying it in university" or even "I saw it on the news last night" does not give people a true perception of cultural conflict. The viewer/reader should always keep it in the back of their mind that the article could be a biased opinion or an exaggeration of the facts. If a war was to go on for a year & a news presenter had to write a ten minute article on it, do you think they would compress all the major atrocities and skip on alot the true cultural conflict or human stories behind the war, of course they would; They would only put in the 'best bits'.- They would put in the dead bodies, the gunfire and all the big bang explosions to make it a top viewing news story during the 6:45 10 minute slot... And in other news A dingo took my baby... OMG DINGOH4X, why is that dingo being so negative? Why can't we just live peacefully with the dingos? CANT YOU PEOPLE SEE? DINGOS SHOULD BE GOING TO ANGER MANAGEMENT CLASSES!

why is that dingo being so negative?

well maybe because, "that dingo" (whose name is Captain Lightfeather of the Ringo Lingo Guild, canine gaming fanboys of the Beatles' star, or should I say Starr (lol!), that band together to play his music, well their (the Beatles) music, as well as band together in Australia, that tries very hard to curb its instincts, and runs around just trying to survive really) has a conscience and you sir, do disregard his conscience with such conscientious disregard is unconscionably unconscious.

Exactly! :wtf: But really, the question should be this:

quote:
What war torn country have you visited?

A much better question that relates to the subject matter.
Or even better, this:

quote:
How do I, as a middle class westener, bring peace to a war torn country?

or even this:

quote:
How do I, as a middle class westener, bring peace to a family that has had their baby stolen by a dingo?

or how about this?

quote:
Have you ever become emotional over a TV news channel?

or this:

quote:
After watching the news, have you ever wished there was less bad news and thought that if there was less bad news on TV that peace would magically come to a nation?

If you found a thwack of 'experts' who were ignorant of Gandhi and told them that he had failed would they be more apt to write a paper that starts with "Given my astute understanding of the human condition I am perplexed as to how Gandhi could have failed..." or "Of course Gandhi failed..."

99.99% would write the second because cultural and biological explanations for behaviour limit understanding rather than broaden it.
