| I also think it depends what type of American you are talking to. As an American I would be the first to admit there are a lot of hicks and country bumpkins that don't know their ass from a hole in the wall. But this isn't a fair representation of America's values or people. The United States is a big place with a lot of different types of people, raised differently, in different environments. Some dude who lives in the boonies in upstate NY doesn't know anything about Canada? Am I surprised? Not really. If you think some dude who works in a gas station in bumblef**k, NY is an American of average intelligence then you are the foolish one... |

The reality is we, humans are very much like apes, aswell.
And the differences between all humans is their upringing, culture, language, education etc... That is exactly what we are talking about. Sad to see here that finally when Canada, and Canadians have been emerging as a throughly identifiable people, it is one of our own who quickly labels us as smug. Smug seems far too specific a claim to lay on the entire population.
A psychologist would label it one way; the reality of academia. Its really a shame that you aren't quoting an Anthropologist, Political Scientist, Sociologist or a cab driver.
Anything they say seems as though it would be a little more relevant. |

We are diplomats in comparison with our lower neighbours...Now I am living in Singapore and I have several times heard people from Australia, Hong Kong, England and Europe say to me when I say "Oh I'm Canadian"; "Oh good, you're not American". |
