His ramblings say it all. The kid never got laid. He's angry and full of resentment because he got rejected by girls. He also feels he doesn't have what it takes to get the girls because he's poor. So he lashed out.
i think he was also crazy. don't forget that part

I'm starting to wonder about whether or not much of this stuff is made up. If he was a loner, why would he be at a party with what appears to be fraternity members and drinking beer with them? He doesn't seem like the type who would go to any party, ever, much less one with fraternity members, drinking beer, and telling them of his imaginary girlfriend.
Though the guy was nuttier than a squirrel turd.

A special justice’s order in late 2005 that directed Mr. Cho to seek outpatient treatment and declared him to be mentally ill and an imminent danger to himself fits the federal criteria and should have immediately disqualified him, said Richard J. Bonnie, chairman of the Supreme Court of Virginia’s Commission on Mental Health Law Reform. A spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms also said if that if found mentally defective by a court, Mr. Cho should have been denied a gun............
