Dubstep (pg. 3)

"I've only heard a few Burial tracks"

"I've only heard a Caspa & Rusko mix"

"Can someone please sum up the whole genre in a couple of tracks?"

Whoosh.

Dubstep is 140bpm bass music. It can't be defined more accurately than that. Anything goes.

There's a lot of ignorance going on in this thread...

Sorry for not knowing everything like you then.

Voila, 10 pretty big dubstep tunes over the last 2-3 years:

Distance - Feel Me
Benga - Flame
Kode9 + The Space Ape - Kingstown
Skream - Lose Control
Mala - Left Leg Out
Digital Mystikz - Haunted
Toasty - Skinny
Search & Destroy - Wavescape (Vex'd Mix)
D1 - Quantum Jazz
Jakes - 3kout

Thanks. To be honest, only two of those tracks seemed nice to me: "Skinny" and "Quantum Jazz", the others didn't appeal much. "Battle Sequence" is ok too. The general perc/bass theme in all is nice, it's the mood of most tracks that I dislike. Altho, if it really is like Distant says, that it's some kind of anything-goes-on-top-of-that-bass genre, that's not entirely surprising.

I don't expect to completely understand and judge the genre from 10 samples, just trying to get a better idea.

well we all have to start somewhere right? i was unfamiliar with the style & wished to be enlightened, so asked for a brief outline to give me an idea of what to expect from it.. if that counts as being ignorant then so be it? :conf:

cheers for the samples jan.. 'skinny' was the only track that really worked for me though in honesty, pretty much agree with noikeee's criticism of the others.

What does "not dynamic" mean, in this case?

Eh, I'm not very good with words in cases like these, but they simply don't do it for me.
Slow and like nothing's happening.
(Don't be surprised, I'm a drum'n'bass head. :p)

If you really want to form an opinion on dubstep, I suggest going to
FWD in London one day to experience it properly on a good system. While I agree with those who say that good music should work in any context, it's clear as day that a system which handles subbass (which is the genres foundation, after all) properly takes the experience and impact to a whole different level.

Label: Hyperdub

Artists: Kode 9, Pinch, Skream.

Listen to these. If you don't like it, listen to it again. Then there are two things:

1- you don't get it: you never will. give up

2- you dont' like it: you never will. give up

Dubstep has been blowing up huge for me lately. I've bought so much of the stuff. Artists im especially feeling are Pinch, Burial, Digital Mystikz, Skream, MRK1, S.N.O, Marlow, Plastician, Joker, Shackleton. Loads of good out there.

Az
I had the misfortune of being at sonar for the Skream essential mix, utter bollocks, I just cannot see the merit in it whatsoever

quick fact, Rusko is my housemates friend from school, he's gone from a ska/dub band to doing fabric live CD's in a the space of a few years. Massive, Massive Fad

This fad is actually a revival of the 80s. It started in 2004. 2006 was the big break for the dubstep scene. 2007 was the consecration year.

You're a year late to say it's a fad, and it's not dead yet

Oh well, you're just wrong. It happens.
