And no, I didn't say that we single-handedly won the wars, but Canadian troops - during thier contribution to WWI - DID earn a reputation as a highly effective force, called upon to accomplish difficult missions, including those that others had failed to complete. That's in the history books, dude. See: Vimy Ridge
Because of this reputation, they were called upon to serve as shock troops. Again, it's in the books.

In WWII, as part of thier contribution to the war effort, Canadian troops had an entire beach at Normandy to deal with. See also Caen, pursuit to Falaise, etc, etc...not to say that we were the only ones taking difficult objectives, but we weren't fighting at Chuck E Cheese's.

What is it that you contest about Canadians serving in Korea? I mean, we were there...what's the problem?

Oh, so you're just playing the "we were there" card. Very, very convincing.

FFS, you don't see every other western nation that took part in those wars claiming the fact that "they were there' is some massive feather in their cap.

Aside from the fact that former Prime Minister Pearson is essentially regarded as the father of modern peacekeeping, and our policy of participation only in multi-lateral military operations, I think there is enough empirical evidence to suggest that we carry some weight in terms of human rights and morality in the world. Canada has also been used as a neutral proxy for the US during the cold war.

Let's face it, the US forces are stretched thin - evidenced by 'stop-loss' policies for US servicemen - and Canada's involvement (along with many other nations') in Afghanistan has allowed the redeployment of US military assets to the Persian Gulf. Our troops are getting killed overseas as well, so don't ing tell me that we are a benign force in the world. Sure, we can't stand up against the ten-fold US military, but somewhere in our 50 Peacekeeping missions, international aid packages, CANDU reactors that consume decomissioned nuclear weapons, insulin, etc, etc, etc, we have made some kind of global statement.

Where's the bull?

Or is glory irrelevant for anyone but your homeland? This isn't a case of 'get the ruler', it's a case of national pride and the out-and-out lack of it some Americans exhibit by misrepresenting thier nationality when travelling.

Ok then, I just think you're proud of some pretty trivial things - evidenced by how far you have to reach to justify your own points.

Either way, straws, you're grasping at them. Keep reaching like a trancer for the lasers.

At least us French know our percieved worldly contributions amount to cheese and the statue of liberty.

If I'm not wrong, all this talk is assuming that the restaurant owner has a problem with Americans right, or do you know that he has one? What if for some reason has a problem with Canadians ?

Much like the American right to carry firearms on 'nights out', I shall exercise my right to refrain from that temptation

People are nice to American who pretend to be Canadian.
People get wise that 'Canadians' are 'Americans' in disguise
People treat 'Canadians' like 'Americans'
I get the shaft. I don't like that.
Scottaculous
Come to think of it, I get the exact opposite treatment. People don't believe I'm American when I tell them my nationality.

This is not a game of 'we're better than you', but rather examples of conflicts that have shaped our identity and contributions to world causes.

I don't find anything trivial about soldiers getting killed. If you do, then I can't help you.

Again, THIS IS NOT ABOUT HOW GREAT WE ARE, or whatever...this is about Americans posing as Canadians and my dislike for the practice.

I'm not grasping at straws, you're arguing the wrong point. Read thread title.
