Agreed.

However, when I said doing harmonic mixing well, I also believe this encompasses knowing when NOT to use it, or when to sacrifice it in order to maintain set flow and keep the floor going.

Sometimes bass lines that purposely clash harmonically switched extremely quickly can sound unbelievably good - I use this a lot, actually.

If done correctly it's the musical equivalent of a kick in the arse.

but i dont like being kicked in the arse :happy2:

since im not very talented and i DONT know how/when to do it in the fashion that you describe, ill stick with my melodic mantra. my keen ear for pitch is one of the only things that i can bring to the table, so i gotta make the most out of it :toothless

:o

I'll freely admit I'm a house DJ.

Some people on here think I'm overly opinionated and critical when it comes to seeing DJs, and they're probably right, but I'm far harder on myself.

that; i hate the idea that just coz you own some decks youre not allowed to express your negative opinion about other DJs, or so doing somehow implies that youre better than they are. a lot of the time it just comes down to taste and preference.

hehe, i think we all are! :)

pfft, key mixing ain't essential - just sounds a bit better.. I don't want to be restricted in what I play having to be in key with the last tune.. if it ain't in key, do a snap mix & it sounds..

and people care bout the intracacies of djing, it's the anal retentiveness that makes DNS pay attention to the finer details .. you and I are both perfectionists jimbo :p

key mixing sounds SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better imo.

i started key mixing as soon as i got my decks. i tried not mixing in key for one "session" a few weeks ago. it generally just sounds so wrong to me.
the thing about keying tunes is, you dont HAVE to always mix in key. If you know 2 tunes that are out of key work really well together, its not like you cant mix them. but know the keys just makes it so much easier to know whether the mix will sound good or not.

and i woulda thought phrasing was a basic requirement of any mix really?
tbh i find it way easier than beatmatching

haha, i agree with you mate. ;)I have never keyed a tune in my life and in 11 years of djing have never had someone mention my mixing sounded really off.

If you do it and it works for you then thats great and keep doing it but i think people put too much emphasis on it tbh. What really matters imo is the tunes you choose, the way u build a set and clean mixing/eq's in that order.

just my view tho so for those that like doing it i wont try to convince you otherwise. :)
