Canada's podium drought continues, but weekend promises better

13/08/2008 12:11:00 PM

BEIJING - The drought continued for Canada on Wednesday as its first legitimate chances at bringing home a medal failed to deliver on Day 5 of the Beijing Olympics.

Divers Alexandre Despatie and Arturo Miranda, who finished second at the world championships last year, placed fifth in the men's three-metre synchronized diving event.

Fencer Sherraine Schalm, ranked fifth in the world, lost 15-13 in the round of 16 of the individual epee to Hungary's Ildiko Mincza-Nebald.

"It's like I imagine being a man, it's like being kicked in the nuts repeatedly, that's how bad it feels, you feel like you want to curl up and die," said Schalm, who was devastated by the loss.

Canadian men's 4x200-metre relay swim team, considered one of the country's best medal hopes in the pool, finished fifth.

And Brent Hayden, who tied for gold in 100-metre freestyle at last year's world aquatic championship, didn't even get a chance to swim for a medal after flaming out in the semifinal.

Back home, a national newspaper ran an editorial Wednesday entitled "Enough With the Personal Bests."

"Despite some bright spots, our summer Olympic team is not very good," it said bluntly.

Despite the fact the divers were Canada's first bona-fide medal hopefuls, Despatie tried to look at the bigger picture.

"Diving is not here to support Canada on its own," he said. "The Games have just started. People are still training for their events, they're still competing and the medals are going to come.

"We want medals too. Don't give up on us."

There are other hopefuls.

Mike Brown will swim for a medal Thursday in the men's 200-metre breaststroke after finishing first in his semifinal heat in a Canadian record time of 2:08.84.

And some of Canada's top medal contenders will compete over the weekend. The highly touted men's eight rowing crew will race in the final Sunday. The Canadian rowing team also has medal potential in the women's eight and the men's pair.

I know every time I got kicked in the nuts the first thought I had was "Wow...so this is what it feels like to loose at the Olympics"

What awesome moments on the women's gymnastics team today. It's really great to see good sportsmanship is still alive and strong!

exactly!! These people have trained their asses off their whole lives and are huge role models to kids and adults alike. Its a dream of many to be an olympic athelete, and to most of us who will never see that dream realized, we wish live vicariously through them! I used to pretend I was Dominique Dawes and Kerry Strug and do cartwheels on a piece of wood as my balance beam. ha! ;)

And I think every country has its right to put CLEAN, healthy atheletes in the limelight. If **other** countries are "overglorifying" OUR U.S. atheletes, then perhaps you should take that up with your own media, because I find it perfectly acceptable that NBC (and our OWN national broadcsating) shines a light on our olympic team.

Just wondering...

Does anyone really know why Golf is not considered an Olympic Sport?

I was looking around and found that it was a sport in 1900 and 1904 (We won Gold in the Men's Golf in 1904..woohoo)

Personally, I think Golf is more of sport then a lot of the other 'sports' that are involved in the Olympics, and there is great international competition involved with it...

I don't know why it isn't anymore but during the British Open they were talking about it and there is a committee that is in discussions with the IOC about bringing golf back as an Olympic Sport. It could have been the lack of proper golf courses (just my guess).

There are so many different formats you can have too. You can have individual stroke or match play and team stroke or match play. With golf on the uprise in popularity across the world I am sure we will see it back in the Olympics.

You are right to some extent....what recreational golfers do on the weekend is not a sport...what the professionals do is a sport.

I'd love to see golf back in the olympics. Maybe a national team format like the old Alfred Dunhill Cup competitions from St. Andrews.

Always loved watching those and i was like....10

i also think cricket (the short 20 over format) should be a part of the olympics. They have shortened the game down to 3 hours so it makes for enjoyable tv watching rather than mundane 5 days of men in white shirts hitting a ball with a piece of willow.
