Diving is just as bad...

Really? I only watched the Despatie diving competition, and the Chinese guy who got 1st was perfect in every way imaginable. Despatie ed up here and there, but the other guy was a diving machine. He deserved those scores.

I saw both dive yesterday, while the Chinese guy was flawless, I wouldn't say Despatie was that bad.. I saw the slow motion replay and he was pretty good actually!

Yeah, the chinese guy who won deserved it hands down. But there was another Chinese guy who came in 3rd (maybe 4th)...

anyway, they mostly said it on his dives. The judges would give him an 8.5 when he probably would've deserved an 8.0

Pretty good doesn't measure up to perfect, so perfect being first and pretty good being second seems completely fair to me. The judges can't expected to give pity to Despatie just cause he's Canadian, lol.

Last night I watched Young People ing, and in one scene a girl starts to bitch about the Equestrian sports in the Olympics, using pretty much the exact same argument as Orko, concluding her rant with

"It's like putting midgets onto the shoulders of guys doing the 100 meter dash, then giving the gold metal to the midget"

it reminded me of this thread.

That was the most mindblowing race I've ever witnessed. Michael Phelps who??? King of the Olympics belongs to Usain Bolt with his double win now breaking the 2 most coveted events of the games. Now I'm just hoping the Jamaican relay team shatters the American relay team world record later this week. ;)

Personally...

Bolt > Phelps in my books..but that's just me lol

If you take his 200M time (19.30) and divide it in half, its on average 9.65seconds per each 100M.

Just imagine what he could've done if he actually ran the entire 100M!

WOW!

haha hater!! :whip: ;)

YOu cant compare the two. Guarantee if you put Bolt in a pool he wouldnt swim worth , and same for Phelps on the track.

simple.....its judged by people and people make mistakes...that is why it shouldn't be an olympic event...all human judged events should be removed from the olympics.

no offense, but that is the dumbest comment in this thread. YOu would take out one of the worlds oldest sports because its judged? silly.

Gynmastics takes insane amounts strength, serious dedication, endurance, flexibility, artitistry, (etc etc ...add your own words HERE), probably more than most other sports. I can not tell you how impressed I am by some of the things that these atheletes can DO with their bodies, and you are saying it shouldnt be an olympic sport just because the its judged? Fix the system, dont get RID of it.

just because its an old sport that takes insane amounts strength, serious dedication, endurance, flexibility, artitistry doesn't mean it should be in the Olympics. Caber Tossing is an even older sport but its not in the olympics.

human error needs to be taken out of the equation. the only possible way to do that is have instant slow motion replay that the judges review. The problem with this is that it would take way too long to get marks.

+1

And the only reason why it should not be considered an olympic event (or should be changed) is because that deductions and penalties are based on the judges interpretation of the performance.

It's not really fair to the athlete when one judge scores them an 9 and another judge scores than an 8. It makes it really difficult when there aren't any specific guidelines to what constitutes a deduction, and what doesn't. So the justify they get rid of the lowest and highest scores. But that still doesn't justify that there is a lot of room for ever.

As well, the judges are not allowed to be bias, but it sure is pretty hard not be bias towards certain individuals or countries...

That's all i'm saying.

Also, another thing with the diving, they commentators "well the diver was slightly off there, but since the judges are sitting to the side of the swimmers, they aren't able to see that deduction..."

That is considered fair judging??? How is that even possible for an olympic event. A diver will be able to score better than what they should've just because they judges are sitting in an appropriate position?? (it's across the board, not just for a specific diver).
