Dating someone who has different tastes in music (pg. 8)

I think there is some conflicting information here though between two things.
The initial quesion asked if you could date someone who has different taste in music, though a lot of responses are in regards to 'the scene'
I think I would prefer dating someone who wasn't in 'the scene' but enjoyed the music at the same time. That would be ideal, although you never know. It depends on the person. |

All I listen to is house music, I just don't have any time to listen to anything else. Becasue I'm constantly picking up new tracks 2-3 times a week, I need to listne to them to pick out the one's I'll play.....and learn those ones. So unfortunately it's all house 24/7...
So when I met me current gf she was bombarded with house 24/7 as well. At first she wasn't into it but as she listened to it grew on her. Now she LOVES house and is so glad that world was opened up to her...
(although I did get her an iPod so she can have a break in the car when needed) |

Common interests are nice, but in the long term, individual interests are more important. 3-hour conversations about tracks and DJs are about as interesting as 3-hour conversations about modern art or the weather.
It is important to agree on the significance of things like this; otherwise you end up with one person bitching all the time and the other person accumulating resentment. |

i dunno...i haven't come across this issue yet. so far, so good!
i like a variety of music, so it wouldn't be a "you must like what i like" issue cos i don't enjoy just one genre. however, the stuff i love the most would have to be tolerated cos i listen to it for the majority of my day. i think more important would be someone who is passionate about music, whatever that may be. although i admit that i am a music snob, so i'd probably have to draw the line at some stuff (ie: trance)! :p
it would be nice if they liked EXACTLY what i liked. i'm not gonna deny that would be pretty awesome, but there are some more important things than what you listen to...like how hot you are (i'm kidding, i'm kidding!) i don't think it would be a dealbreaker for me. |

It's nice to have a big enough over-lap that there is a big pool of stuff that you both like before knowing each other - but still different enough that you get to expose each other to new music.
me and my partner both really like allot of the same stuff - but I tend to gravitate more towards the colder / synthetic sounds like Hawtin/Plastikman, Sleeparchive, Seph, Monolake or the chuggier stuff like Tony Rohr (came into techno via psytrance - so still got a softspot for rolling basslines and a harder edge), he's more into stuff like Ricardo, Cadenza records, bit more on the housier and mellow side than myself.
But, I still like most of his stuff, and he still likes most of my stuff - but our "favorites" are kind of on the opposite ends of the spectrum, but still highly compatible, like a Richie vs Ricardo set :) |

In my experience, I've enjoyed dating someone that's in the scene. But I know it doesn't work for everyone though. It's definitely important to have other individual interests separate from each other as well. |

Although I would substitute the DJs you listed. That's exactly what I find with my bf as well. |
