I might get for this, but I think Vanguard should book more DJs that spin like Guetta (I don't care if you guys call it cheese).

Maybe I'm going to the wrong nights, but almost everytime I've been to Vanguard, the DJs are playing prog/techy house that IMO caters to people who are rolling. I definitely don't mind prog/tech house, but I think this more energetic type of house mixed with vocals and is a lot more fun & exciting to dance to lol.

I was Giant's promo director since they've been at Vanguard right up until a couple months ago (left for my own reasons...and as most of you know it's mostly because I'm moving). I have been there for the slow nights, the crazy nights, the Friday Insomniac nights (PVD, Tiesto, and so on) and everything in between. Used to host and dj the backroom with 4:Score and opened the mainstage 6 times including for Serge Devant and Blank & Jones the first night they started with the hip hop upstairs. I wasn't happy about that change either. But this is a business...and chages like that help make it possible to bring you...well let's see...Guetta, Sasha, Digweed, Sanchez, Kaskade, Dubfire, Sharam, Fedde, Benassi, Sinclar, Catteneo, ect, ect. I worked for 3 years with Avalon before that. And now from someone on the outside of promotion...just going out to have a good time (hell...I spun at Circus Saturday while still trying give you all advise on how to get into Guetta)...I still have to say that the Vanguard staff and Giant does all they can to make the best possible club experience for you guys, and too many people take it for granted.
It just upsets me. I'm leaving LA soon and I can't tell you how much I'm going to miss this club scene and all it has given me. Not that I won't be back as often as possible, but I won't, at any given time, have the options of fantastic clubs and talent and good people to see and enjoy any ing day of the week, and triple for the weekends. Stop the hating and enjoy what you got guys :)

i'm not sure why you're rambling on about yourself or how any of it relates to my suggestion to raise the price in order to control the crowding (or even cool1g's response to that idea), but the idea that other people should kiss ass to the establishment for bringing in big names that would make any business in la a ton of money is ridiculous. what would people do without vanguard or giant? they'd probably walk across the street and pay money to the line of clubs and promoters waiting to replace them in that market. are they really doing all they can to make it the best possible club experience for paying customers? not if people can't ing move inside the club. not if it takes 10 minutes to walk across the room. that sounds to me like a trampling time bomb waiting to go off at the first sign of trouble. i'm not saying other clubs aren't guilty of the same overcrowding, but let's refrain from glorifying a club or promoter for going through the motions of bringing one of the highest demand djs in the world to one of the largest markets in the world. to me that sounds like the equivalent of honoring exxon for putting a gas pump in motor city. there may be plenty of reasons to appreciate what they do, but "thank god for giant/vanguard because without them it would be impossible to see tiesto/guetta/sasha/etc in la" is not one of them.

this in arguement about LA's EDM scene and how it's inferior to other North American cities is getting older than .....No alcohol past 2pm means your last form of alcohol consumption is goin down no later than 1:30am... This factor is what decides it all IMO ...

the alcohol deadline depicts what your afterhours scene will be, depicts what the quality of the crowd will be overall...i agree that our afterhours scene is pitiful (anything past 4am). But the talent that comes through here is impecable...

Lets take this weekend for instance. What other city has Dave Seaman as a backup plan, fading in the background at another club down the street on a regular weekend. Any other city Dave Seaman would be deserving of a solo headliner.

Im really sick of hearing rookie people say things like " the LA scene sucks..."

im not taking anything away from Crobar,Pacha,Guvernment and Space, but i really dont think "the LA scene sucks" is an accurate statement...

these clubs either have an extended lastcall for alcohol (which can make or break the entire crowd and vibe) and/or are seasonal clubs who have sick dj's hold events there but primarily rely on great local talent to carry the scene yearround.

Yah we have some cracked out washing machines as impediments every now and then but nowhere is perfect. If we are talking overall clubscene, big name djs at clubs and massives, LA is untouchable....CARL COX AND SASHA SPUN ON THE SAME IN NIGHT LOL!!!!! THATS IN RETARDED....and just for good measure lets hold a massive 10-15 miles away with Lawler and PVD headlining... with the following weekend awaiting Zabiela and Prydz on back to back nights at one club, and Howells, Sanchez, Sasha, Guetta on back to back weekends at another club...think about it....i mean seriously!?!?!? are you really serious...??? oh and were not done friends, Sharam is cominup just to top off a solid 08'

Lets not even begin to talk about the NEWYEARS parties....
No city in the world has better shows and events for NY hands down...! And every dj's choice of city to be spining for NEWYEARS is Los Ang....im a little disapointed though bout this years NEWYEAR lineups. Watch Im gonna bite my tongue i know, i have a feeling Sander is gonna spell redemption one letter at a time. lol

In conclusion, when were talking overall scene and yearround talent i really dont think anyone can with LA...PERIOD!

All the out of towners and people that are now here but originally were from somehwere else are so quick to talk and embarrass themselves....think before you make retarded statements...

QFT. Add on top of that, you get house parties by Deep, techno by Compression, Drum n Bass, etc...nothing tops LA in the country.

since the beginning of october San Francisco has had
Sasha, lawler-at a small venue(harlot), robbie rivera(massive this weekend) pvd(halloween massive in richmond), zabiela-at a small venue(mighty), prydz, tong, axwell at a small venue(vessel) guetta, lovefest weekend(too much talent to list AVB ATB, kyau & albert etc)) kaskade, bennassi, dubfire(this saturday) 4 strings, darude, fedde le grand, sharam(in 2 weeks at harlot)And almost all of these events you could have attended for $10 or less with the exception of the massives, sasha, guetta, prydz(halloween) and the lovefest events.

Ive been to 2 EDM nights this year in OC/LA(sinclair(vanguard) rivera(heat, which i did enjoy) and probably 15+ events in SF this year and i live closer to LA than SF. i did the LA scene up very often from 2002-2005,there is definitely something different about the two places.

I recommend some of you guys(tommy, mikey) who have not done SF to plan a trip in 2009, and I'll show you guys what i mean. by the way my first SF visit was August 2007, so not too long ago.

Picottoisgod and DJ Reese hit the nail on the head, very spot on comments....

Unfortunatley, its human nature to want to complain, and that is what we are seeing here; its very common on internet boards. Very sad. We are so unbelievably spoiled here as far as talent goes...it's sick. See post above.....

I had friends from Vegas (you know...Vegas, sin city, party town, USA) come in for Laidback last monday at MNS. They loved the vibe and came back again to stay this weekend for Guetta. They really appreciated the choices they had went it came to EDM, nothing like they have in Vegas. They looked at the upcoming calendar for Avalon and Vanguard and were besides themelves....

Sure, no venue is perfect. I didnt like leaving my house 8:30 to go to Vanguard, pay for parking and then have to wait in 3 lines to get in but hey, it goes with the territory. You are partying in a world renowned venue, with top 5 talent with gorgeous girls everywhere. Enjoy what you have people because I gaurantee that if you ever move to timbukto, you will miss the days when you had the chance to experience the very thing you are complaining about.

don't you understand supply and demand? the cover prices in SF are irrelevant to what the promoters in LA can charge (or have to). and most of those djs are playing LA on Sat nites which are the most expensive nites of the week to book a dj. remember the booking agent know they can get $40K+ for a top 5 dj in LA on a Sat nite. they can't get near that in SF for a thursday or friday.

call up AM Only to see how much they quote you for a top dj in LA for a Sat nite...you'll find out is the odds are very low they'll even let you book the dj without a track record and to not step on the toes of Avalon/Giant who book the same djs regularly.

and btw its that considered LA has the best techno scene in the country right now, and cover charges are always $10 to $20 for that.

PS - David Guetta tix are $75 this Sat nite in South Beach. and drinks i guarantee you cost more at LIV than at Vanguard. for friday in NYC Guetta tix are $40, which is comparable to last Sat nite here (really more than it was up until the last week).

i'd love to hear from anyone(tommy) that saw guetta more than once so they can tell me if his performace on saturday was better than his previous saturday(vegas) previous sunday(San diego) or friday night(san francisco) its not like his performance saturdays exceeds that of any other night of the week because he is making more on a saturday than he would on a tuesday. hes not manny ramirez who will tank it and then put it in overdrive at any moments notice.

saturday is the only night of EDM at vanguard(and avalon i think) so thats the only supply, whereas in SF you can find it thursday, friday and saturday. I know if i had chosen to go see tiesto at vanguard in the summer, i wouldnt have cared if it was a tuesday, wednesday, or thursday, if anything the least packed night would have been my preference. I dont go to events because its the spot to be, i go to events because I want to see the performer, im sure many of the Guetta attendess on saturday had no idea who he was at the beginning of 2007.

Also last year whem guetta played sf in november(the day after vanguard) he did so at a small club called SLIDE, which is next to ruby sky and presales were $10. Dj's are like stocks, right now guetta's stock is high.

actually you are wrong. Vanguard has Deep every Sunday nite which is a long running weekly party which regularly brings in top notch deep house djs. Avalon has done a couple of friday nite parties recently with Zabiela and Dixon & Ame. Compression throws their parties on fridays and they've had recently SOS, Adam Beyer among others on friday nites. Those shows were again no more than $20 or so. Monday nites you have MNS which recently had Laidback Luke, Trent Cantrelle and Stanton Warriors for between free and $20 depending on what time you got there.

the Tiesto shows this past summer were either wed/thur/fri and Vanguard and all sold out. and he's returning on a monday and tuesday next month in Orange County. Guetta plaed a Sunday nite show last week in SD for Giant.

And again, you are not getting the $ behind this. if you are a booking agent, you are going to want to get your talent a west coast trip...as LA will get you the most $ for your client you book that nite and then the others (SD, SF, Vegas, Seattle, etc.) fall into place.

Spundae/Avalon and Giant are able to tell the agencies they can book a dj for a 2-3 nite set of shows and that is very appealing to the agents.
