Oh, so if they can only be "managed," they can only be managed by prisons?
lol, okay.
lol... what?? No I didn't say that either. Behavior Management programs are available for all types and degrees of mental illness like agoraphobia or OCD or dependant personality disorder- all mental illnesses by definition that have treatment at their disposal. You aren't going to find many of those people in prison. I'm just saying with the severely mentally ill (schizophrenics for example), you can only hope to manage their behavior for them to be productive members of society to some degree. And the best way to do that is through a combo of intense therapy/behavior management and pharmaceuticals. States get millions of federal dollars each year to fund these programs and ficilities that are available to a much higher standard than most other countries. Could they be better? Sure, it can always be better but it could also be a hell of a lot worse (see Russia).
Look, it's just a fact that the mentally ill commit crimes at a higher rate than the general population... naturally you're going to have them in prisons. For those who commit violent crimes, like it or not, you have to keep most of them behind bars because they can't be rehabilitated like some rational minded people can; the recidivism rate has got to be through the roof too. Put them into a minimum security facility and they're going to escape; we can't just let them roam the streets because they have a mental illness that isn't their fault.

You 'revealing' that you have a mental illness would be about as shocking as Mr. Mystery revealing that he's had a pine cone stuck up his arse since age 8.
On a serious note, bi-polar is a very serious condition; quite possibly one of the worst mental illnesses. Imagine being unable to control yourself from selling your house, sleeping with your best friend's spouse, flying to the other side of the world on a whim or deciding to try smack for the first time because the mood struck you. It would be truly awful.

check out this funny but sad interview by DMX. I say it's sad at the same time cause he admitted before he's bipolar. seems like he needs to be coked up to cope with his disorder.

You know what would be really sweet? Multipolar disorder! Now that's hardcore!

Bipolar is quite serious, but well treated with medication. As long as those with the illness stick to their medication regimen, they live very "normal", healthy lives.
Now, schizophrenia....there's a mental illness that typically isn't treated so successfully. Even with meds the chance for relapse or occurrence of psychotic episodes is still very high. Lots of schizophrenics commit suicide.

Let me just say I have been looking for a thread like this for a while, and I have enjoyed reading this very much! I come to agree with some of the people on here (SuspicionVandit, DJ Damerchi, StalkerElmo, etc.. [seems to me as sorta the OG thinkers]). I have to say that these things have come to be overly exaggerated dilemmas brought forth by plain greedy people, and have been exaggerated increasingly as time has gone by. Yes I do understand there is a chemical imbalance in the brain or what not, but I feel that this isn't a problem. Why, because I feel the individual can cope with it with HOPE, LOVE, FAMILY, things that fall into the category of evolved HUMAN traits. These kinda things DO help and help VERY well. I have two cousins that would be considered AUTISTIC RETARDS by professional ******s, but since I come from such a loving and accepting family, they live their lives and are seen living their lives as beautifully as the most beautiful thing on earth. What I'm trying to say is that all this believe it or not has been exagerrated to an extent im ashamed to see. Have some more hope in your lives my brothers and sisters, more love and care. Im not here to put down the medical profession but im dead sure that there are very wrong things being done to have a very sad end goal. That's my two cents on this subject, love you all ;)
