not happy about this one either.
HABS get rid of Halak and now sign plekanec for 6 six years @30million. WTF is going on ? Plekanec is useless in playoffs and HALAK is god in playoff. BACKWARDDDDDD |

on the other hand when is the last time a canadiens player signed for 6 years ?
pleks must be happy in montreal to sign such a contract, that's a good thing. |

I think I can live with the Plekanec signing because he's only 27 and still learning...looks like he can still get better with Cammy, Gio and Gomez on the team. It's really the best center the Habs could have signed given the market and cap situation. Some compare Pleky to Datsiuk ($7.3M / year)...I hope they're right because 6 years with a no trade clause can be very long.
For this to work though, Cammy and Pleky absolutely need a big, fast winger to complete their line. Flyers and Blackhawks had at least 3-4 of these key players (Buffin, Leno, Hatnell, ....). Not much room left to sign such a player; we need to free up some $ by letting go a few big salaries (Harmlik maybe?).
With his first couple of moves, Gauthier showed he has balls imo. I like him so far. |

balls yes...the 6 year, 39 mill, no trade clause contract is going to suck if the cap gets rolled back. Don't forget we have a markov that needs a contract next year.
in the end we shall see...the salary handcuffs are gaineys doing not gauthier. |

| montreal is in a little trouble though...they have about 10 mill to spend and they need to sign a lot of players yet. |

they have the d locked up, the first 2 lines locked up, some support players under contract and a strong farm system to fill the holes.
It is not as bad as it looks actually.
"RDS reports that the Canadiens have made qualifying offers to four restricted free agents: goalie Carey Price and forwards Maxim Lapierre, Tom Pyatt and Sergei Kosyn.
Benoit Pouliot, the team's other RFA, has not yet received an offer. The Canadiens have until next Monday to do so, if that's in fact what they choose to do.
A few notes from our friends at CKAC:
• Price: earned $850,000 last season, the final year of his entry-level contract.
• Lapierre: earned $800,000 and had a good playoffs after a lacklustre season.
• Pyatt: earned $685,000, second-low on the team to SK74.
• Kosyn: earned $585,000, spent quality time with Hamilton or in Jacques Martin's doghouse.
The Canadiens have four UFAs who next Thursday could be shopping their services anywhere they wish: Glen Metropolit, Dominic Moore, Marc-André Bergeron and Paul Mara." |

| It's clear that Andrei Kostityn will be giving 5th or 7th chance on the team this year. I believe that we don't have a choice :S... We can't get anything half-decent for him right now. |
